Super Mario Land

In Super Mario Bros.

I wonder why Super Mario Land was only made for gameboy, does anyone think that it would be a hit if it was made for NES or SNES? I also think that Super Mario Land 1 was pretty much the same as SMB1. Wario was the bad guy in the second game, was that better than Koopa?

The game is too plain, bad graphics and sound. The control of Mario is not as good as the nes/snes series.

The second part looks like a game for children and is boring.

Well, SML is a nice game to spend a pair of hours when you don't know what to do!

I think it would sell good, but mainly because it's Mario. It's been a while since I played that, though. I never played the second one, didn't even really know there was one. Learn something new everyday!

As far as Wario being better than Bowser? Never. I don't even like Wario that much. He just confuses me.

i think the reson they made super mario land for gameboy was because they wanted something different for gameboy. i have only just got super mario land for gameboy so i havent had a chance to play it much. but from what i have played it seems very similar to smb. i would say they wanted a similar game with different levels so ppl would get it because it is something different.

Yes, all the Game Boy remakes of classic characters had a slightly different feel to them. I believe Super Mario Land was packaged with the Game Boy, if I remember right. They liked to have Mario packaged with their systems. He was their sort of mascot. That probably had something to do with it, also.

the second last reply was by me. but i forgot to sign in.

the Goal was likely to draw mobile games to the nintendo consoles, 'Hey this Mario game is cool. What? there are more of his games on this NES thing? I should buy one of those!'

No, I believe the Game Boy was originally packaged with Tetris-- one of the best games for the unit. Dr. Mario is another one that plays well on the Gameboy, though I usually like to play Dr. Mario multi-player instead...

I know it's an old topic but did they make a SML3? I remember playing and beating the second one like 10 years ago. I am 15 going on 16 this thursday

Yes the first Wario Land is actually SML3. I got it the week it was released all those years ago.

They also made a Wario Land for Virtual Boy that was originally officially part of the series, but we know how Nintendo feels about the VB now...

As for SML, I don't consider it part of the Mario franchise, personally. It feels like a hack. Dumb music, sloppy control....even the graphics were off.

I remember beating Mario Land 4 like 2 years ago, I still have it and play it. To bad Wario World turned out to be a bit of a failure.

I like Mario Land 2. It was my favorite GameBoy game. My 6-year-old step cousin lost it and I wasn't too happy about that.

I like using the bunny ears, that helped a lot in the levels. Also, on the above post, I meant I beat Wario Land 4, not Mario Land 4

Well, we have this little button called EDIT, it's rather useful...

Well I did not notice the error till I noticed this thread got bumped. I wast to lazy to edit so I figured I would just add the little info with my comment

hey, which game is this. It looks very much like Mario 3, but I am damn sure that there were no such stages like that in actual Mario 3.

Is this just an image trick?

If the game actually exists, then what is it called?

That's Mario 3... but world 1 looks different...
The design looks rather like World 4, but the level structure is different when I remember right.
Where do you have that picture from?
Perhaps somebody made it up? Or it's a hacked emulator version with new level designs or so?

It somehow seems familiar, though...
I haven't played Mario 3 for years... (except a very short time on an emulator)

The pic is from Visjoners sig (see previous page of this thread). It's probably from a SMB3 hack. I've played a couple with altered map screens. Could PM Visjoner to find out but I don't think he's been around since December.

My first thought was GBA's version might have done somthin to it, thanx daynum

Hey, you said you have played some with altered map screens. What about the stages. Are they different. It would be very nice to see a whole new version of SMB3.

One I played recently is "SMB3 The Second Adventure" which can be found at . I played through the first few levels and they are all hacked variations of the originals. There are quite a few hacks like that at NES ROM-world, especially SMB1 and SMB3. Some good, some bad, but always fun to check out.

Hey, I have that one a try, i must say its pretty cool.
I mean, playing levels that could have existed, but were never really there.

The Second adventure one only is different upto some levels in world 4. The later ones are same. But, i am impressed with what they have done.

LOL well nayway since this topic is here SML one was pretty cool the controls felt to light and fast (Like 80% of game boy games and versions) yeah but SML1 was cool and it was the only mario land where you use vehicles (the last stage mario is in an air plane!) But some of the graphics and features were pretty cool a little above SMB1 (animated backgrounds) So gooma flatten. You can kick turtle shells after stomping a koopa (Instead the shells explode) and the fire balls bounce of the walls now and collects coins too! SO you really had an advantage heh hhe also for every 100,000 points you get you get a continue if you lose all your lives. (bricks are still worth 50 points so rack them up in the shooting levels!) SML2 was like super mario world game except with a coupl of different items and engine). Its a bit chunky (which means it dont feel light as most gameboy games do) and you get a leaf on you hate when you get a fire flower bunny rabbit ears makes you float and eliminates you form having to press up and jump to do a high jump and you can do spin jumps (only when your big). So yeah these games are cool and have a lot more variety then the old mario games. But the classsics are still great though. So it is definitly worth a try. And if you like games where you collect a lot of stuff try all the wario games especially 1 (SML3) and 2 there the most greediest games you cna play when it comes to coins

Oh man i love SML1. I got it for my birthday way back in 1990 or 91? I think? I played it allll the time. One time i wasnt even planning on beating it but i got really far then i beat it and was SO excited. This might have been the first game ive ever beaten. Man what a great game. But SML2 was the best one on the gameboy to me.
