Neo Geo

Not sure this counts as classic or not, but I think it's close enough.

Lately I've been investigating this console more and more, and I'm finding it to be very much to my liking. I always felt that arcade gaming was where the real fun was, but I never did enjoy paying endlessly for it. The Neo Geo home console is based on the exact same hardware as the Neo Geo MVS arcade boards, meaning you can get true arcade games at home. Not some lame port that doesn't do the game justice.

Thus far I've only been able to experience this console through emulation, and a few times in the past that I've played it in an actual arcade. but I'm loving this machine. all of those great arcade games can be played at home. Metal Slug, Karnov's Revenge, etc.

If anyone has one of these home consoles, or even the arcade cabinet please reply in this thread with how you feel about it, state some of the best games for the platform, or some of the worst. show a downfall for this system (other than the cost ) because as of now, I see none.

Back in the times when the NEO Geo was still big I always wondered who were the people who wanted to and could afford that.

I didn't play on a home Neo Geo, but only in the arcades...

My favourite would be Fatal Fury series... Mai Shiranui and the German bad guy Wolfgang Krauser.

Just to let you all know... there are very few Germans with pink hair...

I was playing a Neo Geo game last night with anther German in it. it was called WindJammers, and seriously, as lame as you might think a frisbee game could be, that game ROCKS! I played it for probably about an hour with a friend, it's simple to pick up and play. but you have to be fast to be good at it. It's really just a fancy Pong kind of game, but I had some real fun playing it.

After talking to luke about the Neo Geo in which i had never heard of before i found out how cool it is. If i had the cash i would buy one as well which is why i cant blame you for wanting one.

I remember wanting a Neo-Geo so bad I could taste it! Price was the biggest issue, but the quality for back then was out of this world for home consoles.

I was pretty much stuck to playing the games in the arcade, like most people. The game that I remember the best was called Magician Lord, I believe. I remember being blown away by the graphics, and it was pretty fun, too!

It's a pity the system and games were so much. It was really cool.

Uh... anyway. I always wanted to experience the Neo*Geo, but I don't think it was ever available where I lived, nor could I ever afford it anyway.

I remember playing one of those SNK Neo*Geo arcade systems at the time though. It had a really cool-looking (at the time) 3-D bowling game and 'Magician Lord' (which I was also blown away by).

aes is a great system as is the cdz the cd is way slow. but man the games are one and the same as the arcade machines sadly its always been steep in price and not often found in the wild

I've been considering the option of buying/building an MVS home conversion, mainly because the games are affordable, Metal Slug specifically. Truly all collectors must own or aspire to own some Neo Geo hardware.

Neo Geo always bugged me. Sacreligious as it might sound, it's gaming library always seemed a little empty, and most of it's games seemed to be pretty much standard titles bolstered by using insane amounts of memory.

Plain Jamma has a lot more interesting games.

Go play Metal Slug, any of them. Try to tell me there is a better side-scrolling shooter out there. The animations are BEAUTIFUL in those games. As are most Neo Geo games. And there are the awesome fighting games, like Samurai Shodown, and Last Blade. Wind Jammers is insanely fun, considering it's basically Pong: Super Charged.

I don't understand what you mean by that... they used that extra "memory" for storing the thousands of frames of animations that everything uses, and the great audio, everything just looks gorgeous on the Neo Geo, anyone that doesn't want one has something terribly, terribly wrong with them.

Load it up on MAME, play it for a while, then TRY to tell me it's not awesome.

And believe me, I'm a huge Gunstar Heroes fan, but it doesn't come close to Metal Slug.

I want one. I looked on EBay but I feel no shame in saying I can't afford one. Dang.

Forget even trying to aquire this thing (unless ya got ends..) I made the stupid assumption that I would be able to start a colletion for this thing...almost $600 later I only have 1 console 2 controllers and 4 games...pretty weak..so anyway I "wandered" into emule and guess what? I now have over 300 games...you guys hear of NeoRage?...F@#* those ass@#%!s on ebay jacking collectors!

Should have bought a converted MVS. Games are usually around $50 for that thing. I fully plan to aquire one at some point in the future.

It's usually easier to go for the 'cheaper' CD versions, I believe...

After reading through this thread I decided to go for the emulator, then looked at the size of the NES ROM's and shouted "WHOA, NELLIE!"
Those things are huge! I guess the only way I'll get to experience this one is to buy the console as well.

yeah...emus are really the way to go I think...yeah the files are huge...but an external drive is cheaper than a AES...the cd NES ROM system is way to slow...and yeah the MVS is a viable option...but to much of a hassle to aquire....I plugged in my notebook (where I run Neo Rage & Mame..) to my 37" lcd...and it freakin rocks...I never in my life thought I would be playing stuff like Pulstar, Last Resort and any of the Metal Slugs at home...arcade perfect. I do have a console but only as a novelty...I only have four stupid games for it...
