Sega Master system

In Other Classic Systems

Does anyone else here a Sega Master system? I've always enjoyed my Master system. I'm not saying it's better then the NES because it's not.... but it does have a bunch of 8-bit goodness that only came out on the Master system.

I had one, but i sold it a while back, shouldn't have done it cause there are some great games on it, the wonderboy series, alex kid.
I go to fleas often and never saw one again, keep my eyes open for it but it must be mega cheap ontherwise i won;t buy it.
Nes is priority number 1!

I'm with you on the NES being a better system. But the Sega Master system has it's moments in the sun..hehe. Have you ever played Golvellius? It's a Zelda clone Sega put out but it's really good.

No never heard of it, sounds cool to me, i will check one sooner or later, but only when i find it mega cheap.

I used to own an SMS2. It had a sleek design to it. I really like the game Rastan by Taito. It's a straight forward sideview action game. It was really fun. I remember reading somewhere that the SMS was actually more POWerful than the NES, but I've never personally compared the specs. Even if it was more POWerful, I think their programmers were to lazy to make most of the games look good. I did have fun with the system, though.

Yes the Master System was designed to be more POWerful than the NES, but it was hardly noticeable.
I owned one back when it was the new system on the block and games were so difficult to find (mainly because of Nintendo's alledged refusal to sell their games to retailers who carried content from other rival consoles).

Some good games are 'Zillion', 'Safari Hunt', 'Gangster Town', 'Rastan', and 'Golden Axe Warrior' (another Zelda clone).
Never played 'Phantasy Star 1' or 'Y's' but I hear they're fantastic.

As for SMS versus NES- it's no contest. The NES library easily tops SMS'.

Except for the greatest 8-bit game of all time- that honor goes to Sega's 'Wonder Boy III'!

...
No, I'm serious.

I have a Master System in some box... have to find it again.

It's really not as good as the NES, but there are some good games for it.

wow i seriously never heard of it.... i wanna get one now lol too bad there so rare best keep my eyes open

I found my Master System again, but the cables seem gone. So I can't Hook it up to the TV.

Wow I never knew Sega had somthing before the Genesis, was it a big hit, did it come out before or after NES

Yes, Sega hat its first console out before the NES.

The first console was the SG-1000 in 1983.
SC-3000 in the same year.
SG-1000 II came out 1984.
Mark III came in 1985.
The "Sega Master System" came 1987, the Master System II 1990.

No, not really. It was pretty much outshadowed by the NES and all of it's third party support. Apparently it had problems getting into some stores, too. Companies were afraid of losing Nintendo's business if they carried it, from what I understand.

I never saw a Sega system in the stores when I was little. That's why I grew up with Nintendo.

Technically the Sega consoles were all very good. That's definitely not the reason why it didn't sell so much.

In England the Master System was as popular as the NES from what I can remember. Funny thing is the only reason I got into Nintendo was because my sister got a NES for her birthday, but she very nearly got a master system instead. Just to think, if that had been the case it could have been a master system board that I ended up posting at!

Are there any good Master system forums? I doubt it.

Well, in Japan the Famicom was released in '83, and the Genesis (MegaDrive) was released in '87, so really, the Genesis/MegaDrive was created to compete with the NES, and strangely enough, it's better than even the SNES even though I know I'm asking to get flamed for that comment. I'm just frustrated by the fact that the SNES is so terribly underPOWered...

#1 chip is (STILL!) based on the 6502 which was created in 1975, VERY old tech

#2, it runs at stupidly low clock speeds, 3.6Mhz is it's top end speed, the Genesis runs at 7.6Mhz, and it based on a TRUE 16-bit CPU (I'm sure nobody can debate that the 68000 is better than the 6502)

Granted the SNES can display 256 colours on screen at once with no trickery, it has just sickening slowdown in almost all but the most simple games. the Genesis/MegaDrive can display 64 colours at once (1500 and some with trickery) but a lot of games have no slowdown on the Sega console.

At least I won't flame you. I know that the Genesis is better technically than the SNES. But that doesn't matter to me. I love my SNES.

...

I used to have one , it came with Alex Kid in Miricale Land didnt it/
That game was great. The system was good tho i liked the NES better tho i never had the problem of games not working after a while with the Sega like i did with the NES

I actually got a SMS about a week ago now, it's a decent console, I just wish I had some good games for it...

Well, the Master System 2 came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built into it. The first SMS had some snail maze game built into it. Also, the card slot was taken out of the SMS 2... There weren't too many great games for the card slot, anyway. They still should've left it, in my opinion.

there weren't too many games for it, period. I think it only had seven games

Well, the Master System 2 came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built into it.

A good example of why the Master System failed so miserably. That game is horrible (like the 95% of the rest of the SMS game library).
But still... they have 'Wonder Boy III'.

I remember the "snail maze game". That was on my SMS. You had to like hold left or right and press both buttons to activate it. It looked and played like an Atari 2600 game (which is probably why Sega never mentioned anything about it).

I'm pretty sure it was "up" and both buttons.

the SMS COULD have been a great system, but they really didn't get any great games for it. a good portion of the NES library is good quality fun.

But sadly Nintendo more or less killed the SMS. Back then, if you developed for Nintendo, you developed only for Nintendo. Also stores were reluctant to carry the SMS for fear of losing Nintendo.

Maybe it is. So you've played it too. It has some catchy music.

Actually it was much more extreme than that. Nintendo DEMANDED retailers not to sell ANY games or consoles from other gaming companies. Not just small retail stores either, we're talking K-mart, Target, Toys R' Us, etc.
This coupled with the lack of third party developers pretty much spelled doom for the Master System.

As for the disappointing game line-up, virtually all the SMS launch titles were poorly made arcade ports of already mediocre games. I was not a big fan of 'After Burner' or 'Outrun' and that's the kind of games the SMS had.
The playability factor of most of those games is atrocious. Virtually every game consisted of one-hit kill game play or frantic button mashing.

I used to think the "card games" were neat (because they were the size of actual "cards") and I used to think they were crap (still do) because they consisted of garbage like 'F-16 Fighting Falcon' and 'My Hero'.

Don't get me wrong, the Master System is not a console that I want to dislike, but it truly had one of the most dismal game collections of any system.

Except of course for the wonderful ''!

Yes, I need to get the WB3 cart from somewhere. I found my SMS cables again.

I have a Wonder Boy III cart coming as soon as it can be located.

also, since this mod was done on my SMS, I suppose it fits here.

I shorted the jumper to make it a PAL console... I feel sorry for all of our european members, or anyone that has to use that... flickery, music was slow... everyone needs to use NTSC, PAL is terrible.

We all know PAL is terrible. That's why newer games come with 60HZ modes (PAL 60) and lots of gamers buy American and Japanese hardware and games.

That looks like a nice forum. If I loved my SMS as much as my NES I'd surely hang around there.

Thanks for the link, Ruudos. I got some info over there that I needed.

I realized I didn't post pics of my SMS collection. Here it is:

Not bad for a start... still need to find Rastan!

EDIT: I haven't even peeled the stickers off yet! ha

i got one of those SMS controllers in shrink wrap
i am very fond of it

Yes i still have the console iteself deeep in my closet but the controllers and Hook ups are gone

ill buy it if u find it

I want a Sega Master for a main reason that it has the game King's Quest on it. Which is a completely no- fighting adventure game/ rpg. Are there any Sonic games for SMS?

Yep, there are actually quite a few, although if you mean just the standard Sonic the Hedgehog, then it got the first and second games.

If you like RPGs you need to get Phantasy Star, it's the best RPG on an 8-bit machine that I've discovered.

what kind of RPG is it? I mean what other games are kind of like that game?

I would say it plays more like Dragon Warrior than Final Fantasy, but it's really in it's own league.

They have kings quest on NES too. I actually liked that game, it was VERY different from all the other games ive ever played in my life.

There's Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Chaos for the SMS. Sonic 1 and 2 are like the GG-versions, and not like the Genesis versions.

Because the Game Gear is just a portable SMS with an increased colour palette.

I have a SMS and i'm very proud of it.

i realize this topic is about a month old, but i just found this forum and as a longtime owner of both a NES ('88) and SMS ('92) i wanted to make a few comments.
yes the 8 bit sega had some dismal games, but so did the Nes (tons of them, in fact).
I'd like to compare the RPGs because i play a lot of them. the old sega is at least as good, if not better, than the nintendo as far as role playing games go.
what are the best nes rpgs? you have Final Fantasy, Ultima Quest of the Avatar, Dragon Warrior II-3, the Legand of Zelda and a few others, like Faria, Dungeon Magic, etc
on the Master system you have Phantasy Star, Ultima 4, Y's The Vanished Omens, Golden Axe Warrior, and some lesser rpgs like Kings Quest, Miricle Warriors, and Golvinus (sp?).
Phantasy Star is a huge 4 mega bit game with 3D dungeons that the NES could never diplay and is easily as good as Final Fantasy.
I'd say that Golden Axe Warrior is equal to Zelda (i know this is a bold claim, but seriously, GAW kicks ass!), the Ultimas are tied (the nes has cleaner graphics, the sms is truer to the computer game) and Y's can match anything a Dragon Warrior game can dish out.
a far as other games go, the sega has a lot of great platform titles (the Micky Mouse series, Wonderboy games, Alex Kid, Ghouls and Ghosts), fighting games (_2 PLAYER_ Double Dragon, Motal Kombat 2), and a lot of others like Zillion, R-Type, Penguin Land, Time Soldiers. The sms did have a superior system capabilities but rarely stood out except for a few games like Sonic Blast that blow the nes away and look like 16 bit graphics.

don't get me wrong, i grew up playing Life Force, Mario Brothers, River City Ransom, Metal Gear and Dragon Warrior; but i get mad when people bash the SMS and i feel it's at least as good as the NES and has a better ratio of quality games.

I love Phansty Star games. I played them on my 16 bit genisis. Great game. Also, my friend has some of those games Roth posted. I played some. There ok.

yes I love Life Force or Salamander as its called or also Gradius 2

yeah, i have to track down Salamander for the PC Engine. hopefully it has less flicker and slowdown than the nes version

ok, I knew of it when I was a kid, but my parents kept me on the 2600 till NES came out. So now I am getting NES ROMs to use with my SMS Emulator, what games do you all suggest?

The Sonic games, Wonderboy, Mickey Mouse Land of Illusion.
That's what I can suggest you.

Ok and Thank you very much (Domo Origoto)

I got a SMS emulator called Mekaw. Anyway I was playing around with the controls (love the way it is, check it out) and I saw in the option area a box to check that said Mario is not a fat plumber... So I clicked the box (need to stick up for the NES icon) and a saying appeared at the bottom. "You cannot deny facts" I just busted a gut laughing. Also anyone see a similarity between the first wonderbow and Adventure Island by Hudsan? Please tell me I am not the only one who noticed it...oh well time to try other SMS NES ROMs I Downloaded. Oh and this emulator also play's Game gear games, coloecovision (sic) and some other system. Like I said check it out and see what you think. NES Rules.
