SEGA CD

In Other Classic Systems

Anybody remember the SEGA CD? Man, I have fond memories of that system. I can't use mine anymore cuz I don't know where I put it, but I would pop that sucker out in a heartbeat. I used to have an emulator that allowed me to play my old games through my computer, but I don't know what happened to it? Can anybody help me?

AHHHH. Ive been looking for a Sega CD for a while, to go with my Model 2 Genesis. Are the graphics improved from the Genesis games? If so, greatly or a minimal amount? Hows th loading time?

They're improved a minimal amount, really, it's still a Genesis, it just has a second CPU, and (vastly) more storage.

I want one pretty bad as well, but I haven't been able to figure out why, other than to have it.

the Sega CD has its games, most u probly wont find but hey it had its games.
all i have is JAguar XJ220, Solfeace, Sonic CD, TomCat Alley(this game sucks), Jurassic Park, REbel Assault, Prince of Persia, Dark Wizard, Silpheed, Vay,maybe another but yeah most of them are good but its just a pain to get the damned thing out, But now i gots a CDX its alot easiar now.

I really want snatacher, and the lunars.

I know the Game Exchange i work at has a few sega CDs, 3 maybe 4.

I can't be bothered owning the actual hardware. You can play most MegaCD games pretty well via emulation since it is, as you say, more or less just a Genesis. (Nicely, you can actually play the games off the original CD via emulation. I play my copy of Shining Force CD this way, despite not owning the hardware) The music is usually vastly improved though, since it's spooled off the CD.

As for good games, Final Fight and Robo Aleste are worth adding to the list above.

What IS interesting is you can whap a 32X on top of a MegaCD/SegaCD equipped Megadrive/Genesis, and get a 32XCD. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of software that took advantage of it, and certainly nothing good. Some of the FMV based games were released with slightly improved video footage, I think, and that's about your lot.

I have a Sega CD, but all my games are currently burned. That may change, because I'm going to a flea market this saturday. The gfx are pretty good for a genesis, but as luke said, it's just a genesis with an extra processor and more storage. The colors are still 64 onscreen at a time. Loading times are pretty short, though.

I have a Sega CD but it doesnt work. I attach it to my model 2 genesis via the card slot plug in both POWers, run my rf switch to the tv, turn it on and nothing happens. I took it apart and besides a dead bug there was nothing out of place. It really ticked me off that for $20 it dint work.

Might be the connector on the expansion or the cd system. When I got mine, it wasn't taken care of very well. These systems are harder to get to work than an NES with an english muffin crammed in it. Once you get it to make contact correctly, though, it's well worth the effort. Don't let it come loose again.

I agree. I bought it off my cousin for $20. She hadnt touched it for probably 6 or 7 years, but i remember playing it with her so i assumed it still worked because it was in the same spot in her "play room". Anyway ill try and clean the connectors with some contact cleaner. Thanks CaptainEgo

Sounds like the fuse is dead. I had the same problem with mine when I got it. it's a REALLY simple fix, if you know how to use a soldering iron.

I'm having a hard time finding games for the thing though. I have a few legitimate copies, the best of which are likely Final Fight CD, and Demolition Man...

Yep, I have it burned. but I don't include those, since the audio is all just reconverted 128kbps MP3, and sounds like crap.

I do have a local pawn shop that's going to hold all the Sega CD and 32x stuff they get, and sell it to me at cost

Of all the ones I've played on the actual hardware, I enjoyed the following the best (in no specific order) :

Sonic CD
Silpheed
Final Fight CD
Ecco the Dolphin (fantastic music)
Snatcher (favourite SCD game so far)

I'm looking for the real discs for:

Sonic CD
Silpheed
Ecco 1 & 2
and Snatcher

After a quick Google I came up with walkthrough. I was just wondering if these were the steps you followed to replace the fuse or if you went about it in another way.

By the way I own the Willy Beamish CD, and the Gunfighters CD with case and instructions.

I own the model 1 Sega CD, so I had to find the junk myself, but that guide will work for you.

You don't HAVE to replace the fuse, you can just bridge the two legs of it with something until you can get a replacement.

I really need one of these. And more Megadrive games (I only have one)

I'm thinking of buying a Sega CDX does anyone know how much these sell for like on eBay?

Looks like it ain't cheap...

Yeah.. toploader NES costs less, 80-100$ is the average that I have seen personally on forum sales

Looks like it ain't cheap... Thanks for the info the CDX seems a little to expensive guess i'll pick up just a regular Sega CD.

yeah its a huge help having a CDX and think about it i worked about 8 hours for that and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Yup. I had a Sega CD back when I was about 10 or 11 when they were brand new. I didnt like it, The only games I even liked it on it was Heart of the Alien and Masked Rider. I still have it but no Hook ups for it. Most of the games IMO are Mediocre. I didnt even like Sonic CD.

RPG's like Lunar and Vay were decent though, Shining Force CD etc..

yeah ive got the PSX versions and the Handheld ones. except the Game gear one.

Thats my CDX with Contra in it.

If your Genesis has an expansion port then any Sega CD will work. The first generation model will fit a Model 2 Genesis. And of course a model 2 Sega CD will fit a Model 1 Genesis. It may look funny but it will work. However, it shouldn't be a problem to find either one on ebay.

Actually, a Genesis 2 doesn't fit on a SegaCD 1. there's no place for the "feet" on the bottom of the Genesis to go in to. Unless I just didn't pay much attention when I attempted it.

I've actually read conflicting things, however I have read where it has been done. So I'm not sure. I could attempt it. If I were to aquire a Model 1 Sega CD it would be not much of a risk since I own both a Model 2 and Model 1 Genesis.

I'll check it out tonight, I have about 15 Genesis 2 consoles

Seems I've even seen a picture of it in the past. But I can't find anything about it now. Just stories of people doing it.

Just tested it. It plugs together and all, but the Genesis 2 doesn't sit flat. My camera is arse, so I didn't bother taking a photo.

Isn't there some sort of bracket that screws to the bottom of the Genesis?

There is, but I'm not sure how that would help this situation. the issue is that the Genesis 2 already sits too high for it to properly connect to the slot. adding something else in there would only further raise the height.

Almost got one a few weeks back. Came with Model 2 and the SEGA CD system and a load of games for $30.... I was broke so I couldn't get it .

I never had a Sega CD until recently (always owned a Genesis..) I happen to find a CDX, which is a combo of the cart and cd system...its pretty lame though...I only have Final Fight (which has an awesome soundtrack by the way...) and Silpheed...the only thing I can appraciate about this console is the fact that you can play your carts usin the RCA cables instead of the rf output...which really cleans up undesired effects on my lcd..oh yeah and you could use batteries on this thing and use it as a discman...pretty intresting..

Does the Sega CD overall have better Graphics then the SNES?

Nope, It's pretty much just a dual CPU Genesis with massive amounts of game storage.

yeah the Sega cd really is just meant for titles that would never fit in a cart...graphics however are really not an improvement over the Genesis (albeit full motion video was possible and the improved memory helped for perhaps better frame rates which allowed for even smooth lookin early poly graphics..silpheed is a perfect example..)...color palletes and resolution are the same..audio is a whole other department though...
