Dial UP Connection Problem
Hi,
I use a Motorol S56 modem to connect to the net.
Recently, I am facing a problem that is really bugging me.
You see, after using the net for some 20 mins, i get a message that a call is coming. I get three options one of which is to ignore the call. After 30 sec to that, my connection fails and I have to dial again.
Now, I understand that this is due to some one trying to call me while I am using the net, but there are two issues here.
First of all, my countries telophone company do not have call waiting facility, so such behavior is unexpected.
Second, i get the effect even at late night, when I am sure no body would be calling me.
Can some one suggest, why this is happenign periodically. I tried changing my ISP, but the result was same.
If this was a hardware problem, why would it occur periodically.
Any help and suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
sounds like a modem problem. try using a different modem, or maybe switch to dsl
Might be the modem or a problem with the phone-cable in your house.
I had a similar problem back then. I didn't get a sign of incoming calls, but the connection would just break every now and then.
It also broke when somebody in the house dialed a number on the phone.
I hate dial-up.

Thanks for the reply.
Actually, it is normal for the connection to break when someone picks up the phone while you are connected to the net.
But, what i don't understand is why would it occur after a fixed time. I mean hardwares don't have any built in timer or something. Anyway, could anyone refer some other site where i could get a bit more info.
Anyway, how was your problem fixed eventually.
My problem wasn't fixed, I just changed to DSL as soon as it was available.
I don't know very well, but maybe there's a setting somewhere that says cut the connection after x minutes?
In the worst case you could also blame a virus or other malware maybe.
You probably have a Minidialer in your computer, Hunter.
You might wanna check your phone bill to make sure you don't have any long distance calls done overseas.
I work for an ISP and we get alot of those.
But like Manuel said, switch to DSL..it's much better

Yes, I know DSL is a solution. But I was just curious to know what is causing this.
Could you describe what is a MiniDialer.
A dialer is a software (malware) that tries to build up an internet connection via a usually very expensive number.
