Man.. Windows Xp sucks hard..
This morning i awoke to an empty hard drive. Im serious. A freakin empty hard drive. So, now i have to download all my programs, games and i lost all my
NES ROMs and emulators. Any one else have any horrible Windows/microsoft stories?
!
Man, that sucks! I would be SOOOOO mad if that were to happen to me! As a matter of fact, I'm gonna back some stuff up now... you've scared me!
I don't really have any crazy horror stories about my computer system, but some weird stuff has come up every now and then.
And this is XP's fault...how?
Because it is. Now im going to have to look for linux disks... Or i can get a mac. Anyway, anyone have some weird stories?
Sorry, no weird stories... only little stories that didn't harm to anything.
As a matter of fact, my XP didn't break down since I own my notebook and that's now about 10 months. I thought it's quite stable. My Win98 broke down twice a day...
I have to do a backup of my HDD. You not only scared Roth, but me too.
If you're looking for linux disks start (linuxiso.org)
I have a horror story thanks to linux!
Ok, so I had run 2 different distributions of linux red hat and mandrake before taking the leap into fedora. I started with Fedora Core 2, fairly early on. I installed, and everything was sweet, until I tried to boot from GRUB to windows ('other'). I had fallen prey to the classic dual boot error ( .
So, I did the single command and fixed my set up and I could dual boot just fine, yay.
A bit later I backed up all my data and prepared for a new hard drive, (i was going to use my current one in my ps2). Soo, I installed WinXP then fedora core two, and being lazy I didn't take preventative measure to stop the error, afterall I figured the single line command would fix it. NOPE!!!!!!
Nothing would fix it, and I had no idea what was going wrong, and I was in the middle of a few things that I prefered to do under windows. So I formatted the drive and attempted to install windowsXP again. However, after going through the blue screen prompts and a restart I would get the error "Error Unable to Load OS" (or something similar). I forumed and I google'd but I couldnt get an answer, so I bit the bullet and tried some other things. Fedora Core 2, Mandrake 9.1, and Suse 9 all would isntall just fine. So soemthing was going on with the WindowsXP install process, pfft. to make a bad story shorter, it seemed that there is another bug in Fedora Core 2 installation that can switch your hard drive mode from LBA to CHS. Ugh.
Sorry.
and all of that could have been avoided had you known of the wonderous GAG bootloader I personally HATE GRUB and LILO, GAG is beautiful and straight-forward.
Man... I didnt understand a word of that.. am i stupid?
Not necessarily.
I don't understand it, too, so don't worry.
Linux is meant to be a network operating system. Although it may work for PCs it was made for servers.
I know what Linux is.
I just don't understand the part of bootloaders and stuff.
no, initially it was meant for the desktop. Linus sat down with the intent to create an OS, not a server OS, not a desktop OS, a solid, stable, all around good OS. it just so happened that it was stable and secure, so it was adopted for server use before it became so widely used on the desktop. please know what you're talking about before you post...
