About the visitor reviews on NESfiles...

In Off-topic

What is wrong with people? Does anyone use good grammar or punctuation anymore?
I'm not picking on the non-english speaking visitors, but it's quite obvious that the ability to actually construct a properly written sentence is truly a "lost art".
So why am I bringing this up?
I truly enjoy surfing nesfiles, looking at all the games, listening to the music, and (on occasion) read someone else's thoughts on a particular game. I'm interested in what someone indifferent to me thinks of a certain game that I might have liked or otherwise. I'm looking to match viewpoints with other gamers who may have had a similiar experience with a certain game, and were able to share that experience with others in way that is intelligent and informative.

Instead I get-
BAH TIHS GAEM IS TU HARD IS SUX ASSSS STooP1D!!!!!!!!!
WTF IS TEH F*CKIN MUTHA F*X0r YO!!!!!!!!
I GIVE BATLETAODS A 1 OUTTA 1000000000000000000000000!!!!!!!!!! SUXX!!! MOTHAF*KKA BAH!!!!!!!!!1111111111

Seriously. What the hell is that?

I understand that certain other individuals opinions are different from my own. I fully realize that everyone has a right to voice their opinion.
But please! Try not to sound like such a braindead moron when you do it.
You see, the point in doing a "review" is to give a solid description of the point you're discussing (no matter what the subject). It seems all to frequently it turns into a run-on paragraph of strung explitives that serve no purpose other than to fill up web space with the notion that whoever wrote it is really disturbed and/or "st00p1d".
Maybe their just doing it for fun? For a laugh? Yes, perhaps a FEW reviews now and then cause me to chuckle (usually out of sheer disbelief of truly awful it was), but most of it is just annoying.
Even worse, if someone actually does make a decent review, it will eventually become buried by more of the above example.
It is truly sad (in a "pathetic" kind of way).

And I'm not just singling out the nesfiles, as it seems the entire internet is full of people who make me ashamed to be a member of the same species.

I would like to see the nesfiles distance itself from the traditional garbage however (maybe an archived page designed solely for "well written" reviews).

But who knows.

Well that will never stop. There are way to many idiots out there. But this does bring up a good point in some kind of a filtering system. Every now and then the admin, or an assigned mod could go through and remove any useless reviews.

or, as I suggested in the past, require the user to be registed to post reviews.

I believe you do have to be registered to do reviews now. I was asked to sign in yesterday when I was going to do a review. I do agree, however, with what Z.E.N. is saying. Is there any way we could clean up what is already on the reviews? Maybe just throw a HUGE chunk of them out? The site looks really good, then you get to the Games section, and it looks like a bunch of illiterates frequent this site with their "dynamic" reviews. It is quite annoying.

'Archiving' the older reviews, and implementing an approval process for new reviews is on the list of things to change on The NES Files. Unfortunately, I can't dedicate too much time to this for a while still. When I do so, it would probably be useful to have people that can approve these(other than me-- it can get time consuming when there are sometimes dozens of reviews a day). I have, in the past, simply deleted all reviews with certain bad words in them, or if I saw someone specifically spamming the reviews, I deleted all his reviews, but it really takes a LONG time to go through the reviews to read them all...

If someone here wants to go through the reviews, and get me a list of titles and users that are posting junk reviews, I can delete those. Please PM me these lists. Thanks.

It's common courtesy to take the time to express yourself clearly and articulately on the Internet. If someone wants to type like a drunken ape to express an idea, they should get their own livejournal or whatever and post it where no one else must suffer the displeasure of seeing it.
Someone who types like crap and refuses to improve is nothing short of a rude fool who deserves to be verbally molested and ostracized.

This task is a bit difficult, almost every game has people that posted horrible reviews. I don't know if it'd really be possible to find enough time to compile such a list. Deleting a big chunk of them would probably be the best bet...

Indeed-- which is why I haven't done so. Hopefully within the next few months, I'll find time to re-do The NES Files game review structure, allowing for approvals and editing. Thanks.

approval is certainly needed, rig up a system where mods/admins are alerted when new reviews are posted and they won't be displayed until approval.

That seems like a good idea! Can you do something like that Derek?

I've had notification for user registrations, message posting, and game reviews since 11/2000. The game reviews became too much to keep up with reading back in 2002 or so, though... I just need to rig up an approval thing. Of course that also means a back-end admin tool, and I'll probably rig up a different GUI, too-- with pages, etc.

Yes, I realize that it would be a herculean task to monitor the flood of reviews to the site. Having only registered users post them would certainly deflect a large portion of the garbage reviewers.

I was just wondering if anyone else was annoyed by it as much as I am.

It would seem that way. But I guess the whole place has gone through alot of changes since November. It'll probably just take some time. I'm glad you brought it up, though!

Only registered users CAN write reviews-- it's been like that for over 4 years now(since the beginning of the reviews).
