Sega Dreamcast

In Modern Systems

What are your opinions on the Dreamcast?
Do you own one or plan to buy one?

I plan to buy one in the next... years... months perhaps.

What good games can you recommend, which bad games do you not recommend?

(I'm especially interested in good RPGs, so I hope for your recommendations )

I plan to buy one but same as you don't know when. It's probably the best system that has ever met a commercial failure; it had a ton of good games. I think that in a few years time the Dreamcast will be a hughly popular retro system with lots of collecters (kinda like the NES now).

I was in Japan last year and the cheapest used Dreamcast (with box and manual and everything) was 3990 Yen (<40$). I didn't have the money then, but should I find a DC for that price again this year I'll buy it then.

I bought mine about a year ago now, and I love it. if you can, try to get a revision 0 or 1, they can play CD-Rs, which means NESterDC

The revision number is on the bottom in a circle beside the PAL or NTSC designation.

Does this also count for Japanese consoles?

I'm not sure about that... probably better to get an earlier one anyway...

Thanks for the adVice. I wouldn't have known if you didn't tell me. I'll look for that number on the bottom of the console.

I bought a Dreamcast today! I downloaded a trial of Discjuggler V.4 so I could burn it but the Dreamcast doesn't recognise it. I think the problem may be that NesterDC was designed for V3 of Discjuggler (well that's what they use in the FAQ on their website anyway. I followed all the instructions so it should have worked). Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Not a big problem if I can't solve it because emulation isn't the main reason I bought a dreamcast anyway.

I always used Nero 5.5 to burn games for the DC. It's not the current version, but I believe the newer version won't allow you to burn games for DC. You usually have to jump around "Hoops" to get a copy of it...

I always used Alcohol 120% to burn my DC games, of course I only burn legal, open software for my DC

I have Nero 5.5 and knew it could be used to burn NES ROMs but I was under the impression you couldn't use it to burn the NesterDC emulator. Am I wrong on that? I hope I am!

I bought my DC on 9.9.99, still runs, still Hooked up to my TV, right next to my Cube.

The DC JUST barely edges out the GC for my favorite console of all time. I was a very passionate supporter of the Dreamcast, and of Sega during the system's short lifespan.

The design of the DC is great. It's one of the most beautiful and elegant consoles.

Man, the DC is awesome! I wish I still had mine! I still have all my games, though. I WILL get another one. I used to love playing Typing of the Dead! That was pretty fun, and helped with typing skills. Also, Illbleed was an interesting take into the survival horror genre. Dude, those were fun times...

Do you happen to know any good Jump'n runs or RPGs for DC?

What are your opinions on the Dreamcast?
Do you own one or plan to buy one?
Best console EVER! I own one.

Good idea. They are quite inexpensive.

Ikaruga (Best shooter EVER!)
Soul Calibur (Best fighter EVER!)
Virtua Tennis (Best tennnis game EVER!)
The Typing of the Dead (Best keyboard-word-typing-zombie-killing simulator... EVER!)

Let's see... um... don't really know any (but Sonic Adventure isn't quite all it's built up to be).

Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia are highly recommended. I'm not sure just how RPG 'Phantasy Star Online' would be now.

In addition to that, the DreamCast's emulation ability gives you access to the greatest game collection of all-time- the NES! Courtesy of NesterDC.

Thanks for your recommendations.

The typing of the dead... sounds freaky. When I see it I might buy it.

I own Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube, and I'll definitely get that on Dreamcast.

Are Skies of Arcadia and Skies of Arcadia Legends on Gamecube the same games?

How are the Shenmue games? I heard good things about them.

I have a demo of Typing of the Dead, but no keyboard, so I've been unable to play it.

Soul Calibur is the ONLY 3D fighting game I can get into.

I haven't tried Skies of Arcadia, but I was strongly considering it.

now for Shenmue... Have you seen Kung-Fu movies? well, it's like that, but in video game form. there is a lot you can do. it was very innovative for it's time.

So Shenmue is a must-have for me. I love Kung-Fu movies!

I'm playing through Shenmue right now. I've decided to make it my "game to beat" for the month.

At first it seems a little slow, but things start picking up when you actually start fighting.

This game is so well detailed. I think it has just about the best atmosphere of any video game I have ever experienced (you really get the feeling you're in a small Japanese town in the mid 1980's).
I wasn't sure what to make of Shenmue at first. It seems that a lot of the reviews I have read about this game tend to be somewhat negative (people just don't like this game's pacing and strict time management).

So far, I don't see a problem with it.

From what I've played of Shenmue, it looked muy bueno! If I ever played it all the way through, it would take forever! I'd probably try and pick up, look in, and read every object in the game! You could probably put in a TON of hours just by looking at stuff!

yes, you can put in a ton of hours just looking, or buying Soda from the vending machine, or collecting the little capsule toys... it's a great game that I really need to sit down and play though...

Typing of the Dead is reason enough to get Dreamcast. Absolutely love it. Tony Hawk 2 (the best THPS) is great on it.
You gotta get the fishing reel, too.
I heard there is a maracas game that sounds fun...
Oh, and the microphone of seamen is fun..but it wears off quickly..

That system is the second best system as far as peripherals...next to NES.

Oh, and the 2k2 or 2k games are really fun.

I would recommend it. Highly.

Collecting capsule toys???
I need to get that game! I love such games where you an just go around and watch things (when they are made well).

And now I'm also very curious about typing of the dead.
Need to look for a keyboard, too in Japan.

Yes, you can even play a couple of older Sega games at the arcade on the game, from what I understand... one of these games is Hang-On...

Being able to do so much in one game is great!

Playing older games is a very cool feature. I already liked it in Animal Crossing.

ah yes, I had forgotten about the arcade games... I really need to figure out my saving issue and get back to that game...

I bought Shenmue yesterday. I can already see that this game is going to eat up quite a bit of my time! I love games where you can just explore areas and things that have nothing to do with completing the game.

Here's what's left of my DreamCast collection. Hopefully I'll be getting another system sometime in the near future...

Is that controller on the right an original Sega controller? It looks so... different.

I see Soul Calibur there. Great game.

No, it's an off brand controller. It's made by a company called... Naki maybe? I'm at the college right now, so I'm not too sure what it is. It's been awhile since I used that controller, but I remember there was something that irritated me about it. The original DC controllers are better than those. I just want another system so I can play The Typing of the Dead!

and now after reading through the thread again, I'll be digging my DC out later tonight and attempting Shenmue.

I have beaten 'Shenmue'! Yay!

One word of warning to those who play it though...
If you are planning on getting all the "collectibles", make sure you do it BEFORE disc 3. On disc 3, you'll pretty much be forced to play the main story and won't have much time to do extra stuff. It's also a good idea to train your fighting moves before the final disc as well (you'll need them).

I only got about 75 capsul toys, and was very dissappointed I didn't win the Tomato Convenience Store drawing for the Sega Saturn games (that Ryo can apparently play on his Saturn at his home). The "lucky drawing" is the worst thing about the game, but it is optional.

I also didn't get the high scores on 'Hang-On' or 'Space Harrier' (it's hard because you have to do it on 100 Yen).

Still though, great game. Can't wait to play the sequel.
Hopefully it will be on the DreamCast also.

Shenmue 2 was on the Dreamcast, but it was never released here. Unless you want to download it, you'll need an Xbox. I'm not sure about the language barrier either, so perhaps the xbox version is a better bet.

You could also try the Japanese version.
Let's see if I can find it in Japan.

I started playing last night, and I'm a little into the second disc now, but I've hit a rut... I'm not sure what I need to do. but I played for a good 9 hours today, so I think I'll take a break and look at it in a new light tomorrow.

it really is an awesome game. I wish I had gotten around to playing it sooner.

DCs are the coolest yeah coolest new er kinda new
what evar

Has anybody played "Record of Lodoss War"?
If so, how is it?

i have the series and .....still haven't watched it.

I'm not talking about the anime series (it's good. watch it!), but about the game "Record of Lodoss War" for Dreamcast.

Anyone here who played it?

Thats whyI said i had the series not have the game. OH well The cover looks familiar.

From what I know, 'Shenmue 2' is playable because the original release has English subtitles. There's no laughable English dialog however (so no more jokes about looking for "sailors" or Chinese people).

I want the Dreamcast version of 'Shenmue 2' because there is apparently some way to carry over your save data from the first game. I'm not sure how it works though. I think it's just a simple thing that allows you to keep all the "collectables" and stuff acquired from 'Shenmue 1', but it might have something to do with keeping Ryo's fighting moves as well (and that would be a great thing).

If you could use the data from part 1 in part 2, this would be great. I see I have to get both games in Japan. I hope they aren't too pricey.

Shemnue II was released for the Dreamcast in the UK and I assumed it would have had English dialogue same as the first one but I don't really know as I haven't played it. There were a couple of used copies in a local games store recently but they were £30 (about $50) and I didn't want to pay that, especially considering I haven't gotten far through the first one yet. If I paid that and found it only had subtitles I'd be disappointed. I want to hear them tell me to "kiss off twit".

Japanese dialogue isn't bad, either.
Often the Japanese dub is much better than English ones, because the voice actors are better.
I don't know of Shenmue 2, though. (I'll buy the Japanese version, anyway )

dreamcast is cool. Alien Front Online is a cool tank game. Spiderman is also cool. Quake 3 arena is not that bad. I want to get me a keyboard so i can use it when i'm online. the controller is a little slow at times. i bought a used dc and it is outperformed by gamecube and xbox but i think that besides the DVD player part it can match PS2 muscle with muscle.

I am a dreamcast owner, & I enjoy it all the time. I also collect any thing dreamcast, so if you need any info, let me know.

Phantasy star online is a brilliant RPG. sure, you can't go online with it anymore since sega shutdown the server, but it's fun offline as much as it is online.

Typing of the Dead is reason enough to get Dreamcast. Absolutely love it. Tony Hawk 2 (the best THPS) is great on it.
You gotta get the fishing reel, too.
I heard there is a maracas game that sounds fun...

It's called Samba de Amigo, One of the best music games I've played. You have to play it.

I always hear good things about Samba de Amigo. It seems I have to get that.

Yeah, I finally got my Dreamcast!
And it has revision number 1. That means I can use NesterDC on it, right?

Ja. You'll never go back to playing PC emulators again.
I'm working on a tutorial for making emulators for the DreamCast. It includes NesterDC (versions 6.0 & 7.1).

Please also make a tutorial for SNES emulation on Dreamcast. I'd be very interested.

Actually I ended up finishing the SNES one first.

The NesterDC project is a bit more complicated. I'll try to get it posted within the next few days.

i have a dreamcast with 24 original games and 3 controllers
and visual memory
is it possible to play a saturn game on ryo's saturn in his house
if yes tell me how plz
btw i live in holland and own shenmue2 it was released here
but it has japanese speech and english subtitles

is it possible to play a saturn game on ryo's saturn in his house
if yes tell me how plz

in Shenmue 1 you have to win the games from the store by drawing tickets after a purchase, but they aren't Saturn games. You can get Space Harrier, and Hang-On

oh 2 bad wouldnt mind some top saturn games to be playable
cause i already played those at arcade in shenmue

Not quite so, the official servers are down yes, but there is at least one private server for both PSOs.

You do need a codebreaker disc for it, however i do have a working ISO of it, its just a matter of hosting. It's not too too big, if you want it or want to host it please gimme a e-mail. It burns with Nero 5 and back, as 6 and forward has protections, however a simple run over to should let you use the trial to burn. As for trying it out, as yet I haven't, my brother lent his DC to someone and is getting it back soon, which has a Broadband adapter (would be very nice for ver. 2 online play), but the general opinion is it's quite decent.

The only reward is that you can play them without spending any money.
It's extremely rare to win anything higher than 4th place in the drawing, and I think you can only win the big prizes if you use a "winning can".
I've never gotten anything better than 3rd place in the drawing, and the Saturn games (shouldn't they be SG-1000) are the prize for 2nd place, I believe.

(Wow, this is kind of turning into the "Shenmue Thread".)

If the iso is under 30MB you can host it at .

I have PSO, but only the DC modem, I wish I had the BBA, I'd love to play some PSO actually online.

Consider it done (Kudos to manuel)

(Zipped size is about 600kB)

Again, it burns with Nero 5 and back, as 6 and forward has protections, however a simple run over to should let you use the trial to burn it.

Place with the codes for going on their private server.

In case you wanna use your disc for more than just the aforementioned.

first, You have to earn winning cans from soda machines. the only place I was able to earn them from is Yokosuka harbor; particularly, the first soda can machine you see when you arrive there every time (it's near the security booth, if you need more direction). Then, take them to the tomato convience store in Sakuragaoka & give one to the clerk. you already know about the raffles at some of the stores, but at this one, you can earn Saturn games!
Look at the prize poster near the door, at the very top. you'll see saturn games as the top prizes. But there's a catch . you know the drill from here. get a bunch of winning cans, then raffle, raffle, raffle.
I earned Space Harrier, but I didn't want to save.

I don't know about your question, Gautami. I did happen to notice your sig. It's a bit dirty looking, but I resized your avatar for you. Maybe you could fix it up, or if someone else around here is feeling nice enough, they could get the blurry look out of it.

I cleaned it up

Roth just didn't turn of interpolation, which tries to smooth things out, personally, it's an effect I dislike.

please save it and upload it somewhere else before using it though, as I may move things around on my imageshack account in the future.

I used to own one. I hated how the cord came out of the controller. So it went bye, bye!
I only bought it to begin with because I wanted to try Space Channel 5 (Ulala is sooo cute!). Sadly I couldn't get the hang of the game. I kept the game though even after getting rid of the Dreamcast. I couldn't part with her.

Oh, I know what you mean. The first time I saw it I also thought it was weird, but now I'm fine with it and I would never give it away again.

Thanks a lot Roth & NES-luke! not to sound & be stupid, but, what question Roth?

That's a good music game too; There's a sequel on PS2; & I think there's a remake on PS2 as well.

About six posts up you asked:

I was just saying I didn't know the answer to that Maybe Rabidshark will see this and answer your question if he knows.

OH, That one. I thought you were talking about the signature. that's more of a Ziggy-Oriented thing. Thanks again to you & NES-luke.

I own a dreamcast. They are great systems and are usually pretty cheap. As for games, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver is a good game. Crazy Taxi is OK as well. As for accessories, get a VMU. Be warned that it uses a lot of POWer from the CR2032s. The basic memory card (looks like VMU, but has orange sticker where screen should be) sucks. It erases all your data as soon as you
disconnect it from the controller. Hope this helps!

I just recently got my Dreamcast, And i have to say, it totally kicks ass! Probably my second favourite system, second only to the N.E.S.! I cant believe it failed, even though it totally beat the PSX and N64s faces into the dirt.

I've had a DC for a good 4 maybe 5 years now, and I've decided to get back into collecting; worse thing is, I sold off my favourite games, Shenmue I and II a few months ago, good thing is though, I kept my save files, though I will be playing through them again.

At the mo, my collection is measly to say the least(due to mass sell off). All I have left are Chu Chu Rocket, Sonic Adventure 1, Skies of Arcadia and Soul Calibur(jap). However, over the past few days I have bought off ebay;

Jet Set Radio, RE: Code Veronica, PSO, Tee Off, Sega Bass Fishing with Rod and MSR, all for the handsome sum of £26!!!

I have a list of about 45 games I must get for the DC, but I foresee the purchase of others not from the list, just like todays purchases.

BTW, I have heard that Shenmue II is not playable properly on NTSC due to the differences in the TV's and what not. However, if you burn it from the net, you will not get the speech ingame, and only the subtitles, iirc. Shenmue II is vastly superior to I, and yes, your figures, moves, items, diary, dates......are all transferred to it with your save.

The Dreamcast I got a few days ago is freaking awesome. There are a load of good games, including some good shooters and 2d fighters. Everybody should buy one. Seriously. I'd forgotten how amazing it was. I wish I hadn't got rid of the one I had when they were first released, I had a good collection of games and hope to build up a good collection with this one.
Now to get the Shenmues and kiss goodbye to my life for a while.
Buy one.

Dreamcast is very good! Better then GCN, PS2 and XBOX and I mean it!

Then you'll definitely need this book:

The title is "Dreamcast is the best in the world"

The book contains a complete list of Dreamcast hardware, accessories and games up to August 2001. There were a handful of games released after that, but still it seems like a pretty complete guide.
BTW, I will buy that book once I have money again. That may take a while though. I had to buy a big load of books already for my thesis.

Hey manuel pick a copie up for me and I will pay you for the costs and imports, Please, Thanks!

When I buy it I'll buy 2, ok?
Unfortunately I don't know when this will be.
Just wait a bit. When I order it from Japan while I'm in Germany you'd have to pay postage twice. (from Japan to Germany and then from Germany to Canada)
Be patient and I'll try to fetch you a copy.

edit:
They have the book on play-asia for 26.90$. I'd get that if I were you.

If you're kind you order that via this link:

This is an affiliate link of mine.

yeah the Dreamcast is truly a great and seriously underated system...it seems to me that the 3d rendering engine is perhaps a bit cleaner lookin' on this thing than the PS2...no jaggies on dreamcast...
if ur lookin to obtain this wonderful machine I seriously recommend a japanese version...so many great games...
I actually own both american, and a japanese one I got before it was even released stateside...I just couldn't wait for House of the Dead 2...
Does anyone know perhaps why games like Daytona USA 2 and Super GT were not released on the system or where they....? I think some would argue that Dreamcast didn't handle model 3 arcade hardware aswell (noting that the system was centered around Sega's Naomi board..) ...but what do you call F355 Ferrari challenge and Virtua Fighter 3!!..those games were arcade perfect on the system...

I have a Japanese and a European Dreamcast. Both were so cheap I just had to pick those up.
It's true that graphics are really nice on the DC and I personally don't even need much better graphics. I'm content with the level of "this generation".
