worst and best controller styling of all time
what would you say the absolute worst controller styling of all time is? how about the best?
Personally I had more trouble adapting to and got more hand cramps from the n64 controller than anything else. for example, i can play snes for hours with no problem. but n64 was nothing but trouble for me, could never get a comfortable grip.
as for the best i think gamecube may have my favorite button set up, and i also like the feel on the ps2 dualshock.

Well, I haven't used all of the controllers, but I do admit I like the PS2 controller. I admit the N64 controller is a bit off, but I don't recall getting a lot of cramps from it. I did get cramps from SNES and NES controllers, but then, they were good for their time... I'm not sure what I'd declare as the worst...

The worst controller of all time has to go to....Drum roll here....The first Xbox controller. The controller was so thick you would strain your hands using it...lol. Thank god they came out with a smaller Xbox controller.
For me, the worst controller would be the N64. The control stick wore out way to fast, and it was just big and awkward. The Gamecube controller is my favorite. Its very comfortable with a control stick that is very springy, and it lasts.
It would be a toss up for me between the PS controller and the GameCube controller. That styling seems to be very convenient, and is being emulated quite often for PC controllers. I guess if works...
Oops, sorry. The worst is definately the clunky XBox controller. Just to darn big.
I don't really like the GC controller, the D-pad is FAR too small to be of any use, and it's just designed for small hands over all.
As for the xbox controller being the worst, I think the redesigned controller-s is one of the better ones out there right now, solidly built, (and easily modified to work on a PC )
I really don't know what I would deem the best... I would have said the Playstation controller up until about a year ago, but it's become somewhat clunky to me as well... maybe the SNES controller? but not the official Nintendo one, I had a third party one that was thicker, with turbo and slow, it fit nicely into the hands, I found the official one to be too thin.
I'll mention another really bad controller. Please don't hate me people. The NES top-loader controller. That was the smallest controller that I have ever tried to use. Very cramp-istic.
wasn't the top loader shipped with the dogbone controller?
Yep! And it was the most uncomfortable thing that I have ever experienced. That is, unless, you count the time that I peed my pants when I first saw
Metal Gear Solid!
I've never used a dogbone, but I'd like to get one, they seem a lot better than the originals... I can relate about the pants peeing, except it was MGS2.
I'm not a big fan of the DC controller because it's big, and doesn't fit right in my hands. Although I like the DC as a console, the controller is just unfomfortable.
I LOVE the dogbone controllers. I honestly can't stand the old boxy controllers now. Just not ergonomic.
I'm gonna go against the grain and say one of my favorite controllers of all time is the 64 controller. I think it worked really well for first person shooters, and I think a lot of Goldeneye's success can be attributed to how well the controller worked for it.
I like the SNES controller allright, I like the Gamecube controller, the Dreamcast had a good controller...
I think the only controllers I'm not to keen on are pre-dual shock PS1 controllers, though Dual Shock is definitely at the bottom of my list, first-gen XBox was awful, and even the newer S ones are a little big and have a weird button layout, but you can get used to them.
I like the SNES controllers. Good and simple.
X-Box controllers suck. Way too big.

do I just have giant hands or something? I find the Xbox S fits perfectly, the button layout sucks though.
Perhaps you have big hands.
I have very small hands, that's why it's too big for me. And as you say, the layout's terrible.
in my opinion worst controller was first xbox, best controller was snes but i love the new xbox controller too
I don't know the new XBox controller. How is it different? (I hope smaller!)
New Xbox controller:
old xbox controller clone
couldn't find the real xbox one, but that clone has the same button layout, and is modeled after the old one.
IMO the new one also *seems* to be difficult to handle.
I didn't try it yet, so I won't say anything negative about it.
I've recently modified an Xbox controller-s to be USB compatible for the PC (xbox controllers are USB anyway, they just reshaped the port) and it seems to do alright. it's a little too analog for NES emulation, and I have yet to try it on other things, but it seems to do pretty well for me.
That's cool.
I want a SNES controller for my emulation.
There are some USB adaptors, but they are hard to get in Germany.

I've posted it before, but I think this is a great idea:
if you have the cash, I guess there's your solution
(if they ship to Germany)
I bookmarked that page when you mentioned it first.
There are some USB connectors like this one
But always when they are on the German eBay, somebody is willing to pay more than me. (I'm not that rich )
there's always this place:
although most of the cool things there are never in stock. I haven't ordered anything from them personally, but I've heard reviews that they're pretty good.
I haven't tried Lik-Sang, but perhaps I will in the near future.
They really seem to be good.
I got a Paypal account some time before and it's time that I use it.
the new xbox controller is very easy to handle i love it its the perfect size...
old style

yeah, that old style one doesn't look to easy to handle, or ergonomic.
although upon opening the Controller-S, I've lost some more respect for MS... most of the buttons don't have the contact on the rubber part between the actual button and the PCB, there's just a sheet of contact material, and when you press a button it just completes the contact. I think that will likely wear out iin a few years and need replacement. which is a bad thing... the NES controller still work 20 years later.

yea the old style is what at first made me not by an xbox...
so youre saying in a couple of years ill need new controllers....
that suxs!
The reason product gets worse is because of money. Sure, it's a more advanced product, but when you look at the big picture they're saying, "Get as many out there as you can!" That's cool and all, but with today's technology, they should take more inspection into consideration. I believe once all the product was underway, everybody making them from the bottom up started slacking on what could pass and what couldn't. Another reason assembly lines shouldn't have so few personnel.
yea that makes a lot of sense lol..... it sucks how they can get away with doing that and the thing is they dont care because there happy a year or so from now since there getting the money in...
all of these things are what make me not hop on bandwagons anymore... I used to want to have things as soon as they came out... those are often costly mistakes... and honestly not worth it for the bragging rights. you lose nothing by waiting to see how things stand up to the test of time for even a few months. but you could potentially lose hundreds of dollars by going nuts and buying hardware as soon as it's available (like my $500 PS2...)
exactly what i think. I cant belive how much the price has dropped for ps2. The only reason i bought the ds so early is because i dont believe 150$ is that much and it will probably be around a year before it drops any if not longer considering its gonna take a while for them to build up a collection of games
What you say is so true. I also bought my N64 the day it came out. Some weeks (!!!) later they lowered the price about 33%.
Man, was I pissed off.
Except the GBA SP Famicom Edition I bought in Japan (for a very reasonable price!), I will never again buy a console when it comes out. I'll wait until it's cheap. I have my old consoles to play, so there's no need to hurry.

lol yea i understand what ure saying...
how much was n64 when it first came out i dont remember cause i was so little wasnt it 200 or was it 300?

I think it was in that area... another thing Nintendo has always been good with, the GameCube was the most reasonably priced console of the big three in this generation, and is the only one that I haven't heard of any problems with. getting to be too many reasons to love Nintendo.
It was 399 DM (Deutsche Mark) when it came out. When preordering you had to pay 64DM in advance. (267$ at the current rate)
well one of my friend has only owned his for a couple years and his 4th controller socket just doesnt work....
You could phone the Nintendo customer ser
Vice. I'm sure they will do something about the not working controller socket.
well one of my friend has only owned his for a couple years and his 4th controller socket just doesnt work....
I can almost bet they'll do something about it, and quite possibly for free even though the warranty period is up. Nintendo has always been cool for that.

yeah well thats his decision to make lol i doubt he will try to get it repaired....
for old systems, i think the original NES controller is the best, for new systems, i like the gamecube controller, except for the small ass D-pad
worst controller for old systems is probly the atari controllers, for newer systems it's a tie between n64 and xbox..... the n64 controllers feel like they were made with cheap materials, they break easily, the joystick hurts your thumb after playing for a little while, and it's too spread out, the xbox controller wouldn't be so bad if it wasnt so damn big
Really? I didn't feel the N64 controller to be so bad. I actually still like it. Never had problems with it.
It seems like a lot of people didn't like the N64 controller but I think it's one of the best. At first it was a bit strange the way you had to hold it but it soon felt normal.
Talking of cheap materials parts I'm not a big fan of the shoulder buttons on the Gamecube pad. Feels like they've been stuck on with cheap glue and are about to fall out.
The cube shoulder buttons are hard to use, especially the Z button.
But again, when you grow accustomed to it, it's a good controller.
the psx/ps2 joy model is a upscale model of the snes model both very good sticks as for worst everthing else.
Joy model?
Could you find fotos of it and post them here?
Joy model?

yeah pleasei havent seen it yet
I would say that the worst controller for me is the ps1 first edition controller before dual shock. I have long fingers so the my fingers wrapped around the edges and it was uncormfatble to me but the dual shock controller is very pleasing
i personally liked it before although i enjoy dual shock ones better!
If you had trouble with that did you have trouble with nes controller...
I'd have to say that GameCube does have the best controller, followed VERY closely by PS2 DualShock. I think the worst controller is a tie between N64 and XBox, particularly because they appear to have been designed for people with hands the size of a small dog.
i like the curvedy Staurn controller you know this curvedy controller
I think the Game Cube's pad is damn near perfect. I think the N64 pad feels and looks revolting and I was never a fan of the Sega Master System pad, particularily the direction pad.
I have to say Gamecube does have a great design, but I also think the N64 controller was great. I found it quite comfortable.
i like the curvedy Staurn controller you know this curvedy controller
Damn,
yeah
GC is great so is N64
I personally like the N64 controller; yes it's a bit off at first, but you grow to appreciate it.
I personally love the PS2 and GC controllers. (plus you can get them in fun colours).
I
I like 'em I think they're comfy and good for fighting games.
I like this controller---->( Hori's Dragon Quest Slime Controller for PS2)
I want that controller! It's sooo cute! It looks like a demented hershey kiss!
It's like he's saying "I'm blue and smiling, and I'm not going to tell you why..."
That's a really nice controller. I'll have to see if there's not a used one for sale in Japan. I'd love to have that.
I would have to say my least favorite controller is the N64 controller I mean if your using the control stick it's near impossible to use the a and b buttons too. ow!
I had no trouble with using the A and B buttons while using the control stick......
I would have to say the worst controller for me to play with would be Playstations controller. I just thinks its shape weridly, and hurts my hand
I personally loved the N64 controller; It just molded into my hand when I played games like
Zelda, Mario, Goldeneye, Turok.....the Z trigger was perfect for fPS games, as it just felt so natural.
I never had the analogue stick wear out on me, though my mate went through quite a few; however, the one I originally got with my '64 is still working perfectly to this day.
My least favourite is a toss up between the DC pad(man those triggers kill my fingers, and the cable coming out of the bottom-wtf?) and the Xbox pad.
All the people complaining about the first Xbox controller must be small. That was my favourite controller because it was the first one that actually fit my hands withought having to use a cramped holding style to reach all the buttons. The newer Xbox S controller is really good though. It has by far the best analog stick of all controllers. It offers great control. The button layout could be improved though, as people mentioned.
I think the rectangular NES controller is a thing of beauty. It used to hurt my hands when I was young because my palms would rub against the corners. Now that I'm grown up, it's actually quite comfortable. It also wins in the looks department. I love the look of 80s technology.
Anyone ever used the Atari Jaguar Controller this was by far the worst controller i ever used.
i could get a jaguar with a few games, but no controllers or
Hook ups.
