Haha SwitchNES!

In Hardware

So i was sitting here, after a nice canadian thanksgiving meal, and i was searching google. I had been dieing to do a NES mod, any NES mod. So i (Yeah, my BEST NES) and started to open it, and preceded to follow all of the steps. I took me like 5 minutes of debating by myself wether i should cut wires from the POWer/Reset/LED Board. I just took a deep breath, and cut them. I stripped the red and brown wires, and connected them to my Lightswitch. Now, i moved the nes to my TV, connected everything, inserted Bubble Bobble. I crossed my fingers and turned on the TV. Hah! Cool! Bubble Bobble!

Now. My only concern is the LED. I don't have one anymore now that i cut out the Board that contained it. I have the 3 Yellow, white and orange wires sitting there doing jack all. i have the board with the LED. NES-Luke, or anyone else, can you tell me if i can solder something here and there so when i turn on the SwitchNES, the LED comes on? I will probable place it in some cool position near the controller ports or something if i can. I need my LED!

If you wanna try SwitchNES don't hesitate to do so. Easiest thing ive ever done! and a lightswitch, to turn on your nes!?

thats cool sounding. *thinks about doing it* ...hmm.

heres a pic for quick viewing..

And i have to cut out the hole for it tommorow. And get a lighswitch cover. I'm thinking of maybe placing it somewhere else.. maybe on the top cover! But the wires may be too short.

Thats a pretty cool mod. I might do it just to trip ppl out. be like, "look at my NES." lol just to see ppls faces would be all worth it.

I have it all done now. Looks pretty awesome. Can someone please tell me if i can still have the reset and LED working with the leftover wires??SOMEONE TELL ME.

Standard wiring colours would have been nice. It looks like Orange is the ground, Yellow is reset, and White is the LED

Therefore:

White + Orange = LED

Yellow + Orange = reset

For the reset, I would suggest a momentary on/off pushbutton switch.

Lastly, I accept no responsibility if you asplode things.

Lastly, I accept no responsibility if you asplode things.
And that is likely to happen
OneGenerationTooLate + Wires = stuff gets farked up.

murder_killz + wires = black POWer outlet because I forgot to unplug what I was working on. (that happen to me once and to this day that one POWer socket doesnt work. lol my heart rate was through the roof.)

you think that's bad? about a year ago, my house got struck by lightning while i was on the computer. the lighting CAME THROUGH MY WINDOW, hit my computer, and then HIT MY FOOT! i was sitting down typing, i see some red orb looking stuff come through my window, hit my computer, then it moved and hit my foot. i hopped BACKWARDS over the computer chair i was sitting in. it fried my computer, my GBA SP charger and my stereo. it also fried my sisters tv in the next room. that crap was crazy. i don't think my heart has ever pumped that fast

nice mod by the way, i may have to try that!

Ok. I have the LED and reset soldered in, and settled. the LED is at the top of the case, and the reset is between the controller ports and the light switch. heres how i rigged it:

lightning is blue, not red, and is gone in a fraction of a second, you'd have noticed nothing more than a flash, similar to that of a camera, since camera flashes work on the same princepal.. lightning also carrys enough current to put a three inch hole right the way through your foot. the same current would more than likely start a fire in your house also, and do some pretty nice arc welding to your pc case. while your appliances may have been killed by a surge from the lightning, the lightning more than likely did not hit your house directly, and definately didnt just wander through your window, there are much more interesting laws of physics abiding things for lightning to flow through before weaving around your gutters, downpipes, plumbing, and even the earth wire legally required to be there (if you had an electrician in within the last twenty years) to avoid damage from lightning.

lightning takes the easiest path to ground. no exceptions.

sorry, i was in the mood to call someones bullshit.

on topic, isnt there a resistor on the board with the reset and POWer buttons? that resistor limits the current to the led and stops it from frying.. you might want to put that in between the led and one of the wires gonig to it if im right about it being there.. probably put it on the white wire side. (positive?)

sorry i'm not a lighting expert. but what i said wasn't "bullshit" it may not have been a direct lighting strike, but something did shock me and fry my computer along with some other electronics in my house. there was a thunder storm going on when it happened.

Well, i just sldered it directly, and even spliced the white LED to POWer a lime green LED. Ive been using it everyday since the first post, and it runs just fine...so far.

I redid your map to fix a couple mis-labeled wires.

its kind of hard to see.. the only thing i changed was the white wire=Ground for LED and RESET, Orange=LED (-), Yellow is supposed to connect with White on Reset button, leaving you with White and Orange for your LED

Nope, everthing in my diagram is labelled correctly. White is NOT ground for the LED, Orange is.

Sorry man, didnt mean to doubt you...... if you look at the time of the post It'll explain it all!

I've been tinkering with my NES, im gonna add a simple rocker switch (POWer), a simple reset switch (matches the POWer switch), an 8 position DIP switch (for customizing lighting effects) which i will mount in the back of the NES, and im gonna try to completely take out the controller ports and use one of those satellites inside the NES (making it always wireless controllers and no ugly outside connections for the contollers). Paint it up, add some plexi-glass in key areas maybe a fan and a bunch of LED's! Im even gonna customize the controllers with LED's, and maybe make them wireless too (that one might take a little while).

Cant you just see it!!! its gonna be awesome i'll post some pics when im done.

The NES doesn't need a fan! I can't understand you people that feel the need to go through the hassle of putting one on there... it looks like crap, it's a pain in the ass, and it serves no purpose other than making noise. Don't do it.

haha, the idea was just for looks and i had another idea that required a fan or a motor of some sort. I have this piece that is round and has lots of holes in it.... i was gonna Hook-up a LED to the Piece (clear plastic) and Hook it up to the fan or motor and.... Vuala! (<probably not spelled right but you get the idea) a spinning LED effect when you turn on your NES!!!

Dude, that freakin' kicks ass!

And how do you plan to get more than about two revolutions before the wire that's running the LED binds up?

And how do you plan to get more than about two revolutions before the wire that's running the LED binds up?

Well there are two options to fix that problem..... ONE: i buy an expensive piece that allows swivel while still keeping contacts together, TWO: i do it my way and just mount the LED right next to the center of my piece (a diffuser out of a coca-cola fountain unit) there for the spinning piece will still light up, i'll just have to postition the LED just right so that it still has the same effect.

I also took the LED letters out of a couple pop machines. I have 8 of them and i plan on using them to say NINTENDO when you turn it on. i know i can hard wire them up to say that but i really want to be able to use it for other things too like: Time, My Name, Running time, and basically anything i progam it to say. However i have no idea how to do that so it might just say NINTENDO and thats it.

EDIT: Does anyone know what i could do to run these LED letters on a program or something???
