Voices on NES
I was playing
Bad Dudes and it came to my attention that there were Voices, "I am bad", after the completion of each stage. Well in my opinion, this is a miraculous achievment using an 8 bit system. I am wondering, is there any ohter games that have such occasional voices.
The reason, I said miraculous because, unlike the 64 bit machines which can directly use recorded voice, the 8 bit systems have to implement the sound from scratch. That is using frequencies. Or is it not the case?
I thought that certain games had added chips that allowed them to play some basic recorded sound
But still, for an 8bit machine, even if it is a bit scratchy and unclear, I think it's still a remarkable achievement
They also had voices in Gameboy games. e.g. in Boxxle, when you end a stage the guy says "yeah" ... or something of that sort.
That's really cool and agreat achievement they did back then. Everything is so easy today.
Sesame Street: Big Bird's Hide & Speak was advertised as being "the first talking game for NES." However, I remember reading elsewhere that there were multiple games with voice samples released prior to this game.

There was quite a lot of speech in
Pinbot but I couldn't understand what the hell it talking about.
oh yeah, I got that cart recently, the speech is TERRIBLE on that game
I have
Ninja Gaiden III, and you can here, when he slashes, he yells.."Yah", or something.
oh yeah, I got that cart recently, the speech is TERRIBLE on that game
Well, that is the problem with 8 bits, can't really demand much of them.
Even when you get hit on
Castlevania 1-3 I think you can hear a "Boo" or some voice sound even.
At the beginning of the Natsume game S.C.A.T., there is this really nice sounding voice that says something to the effect of, "You've got to destroy them. The Earth is counting on you. Good luck!" That one always stands out to me.
Another one is
Dirty Harry. If you can't stand the game, deal with it and play through to the end. When you beat it, you get to hear
Dirty Harry do the ENTIRE 'Do you feel lucky?' speech! It's actually worth it to play through the whole game just to hear it. It's amazing they were able to put that whole speech on there.
LOL. That makes me want to play the game now.
Dirty Harry eigh" nevar hurd of et. What kinda game is it? I may be very interested in finding it.
Well, since you "nevar hurd of et," it's a side-scrolling game. You're basic run, jump, shoot type of game. I haven't played it for awhile, so I can't remember if I exactly liked it or not, but I do know lots of people didn't like it. Like I said, it's good enough to hear the ending, though.
I found it funny when in the begining of B.D, it said the President got kidnapped by ninjas, are you a bad enough dude to reque the president, it shouded so ghetto
I think they talk in one of the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, saying radical or cowabunga. Maybe im thinking of something else, i dont know.
I have to mention
The Three Stooges, there were a whole lot of different sound clips in it from the original shorts.
I think you may appreciate this!
Dance Aerobics and most of the
Wheel of Fortune games have some voice.
Wheel of Fortune probably has the longest string of speech, saying "WHEEL!, OF!, FORTUNE!!" at the end of the intro. dance aerobics says "C'MON!"
another gameboy game with voice, pokemon yellow, pikachu talks (as much as a pikachu can)
i know it's getting a bit further on, but altered beast on genesis also has voice "RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.." gotta love it.
yeah like
Gradius 2I ( know its on snes but cmon) when you use a speed up or LAser it'll say Speed up or laser.
Actually, I've seen a number of 8-bit computer games do this. There was a ZX Spectrum (Timex to you American types) game called "I-Ball 2", for example, which had digitised "speech". The quality was remarkably poor, but then the hardware inside the computer was pitiful - a single channel "beeper"
Thinking about it, At the time though, yes, digitised speech on an 8bit system is quite rare... probably because it took up a lot of space, sounded bad and didn't add much to the game. For the size of a speech sample, a developer could have crammed a LOT more levels into a game.
Skate or Die 2 , had an awesome opening sequence , its going through my mind now:
Skate or Die , skate-or-die, die die die die die
The most obvious to me would be the
Gauntlet games, "Red wizard needs food badly"...
They even have a voice when you die, "Ughhhhh".
AVE's Pyramid has some crude voices too!
Great game!
