After 14 million sold units of the Nintendo DS, Nintendo announced on January 26th that there will be a revised model of the Nintendo DS called DS lite.

If the screen stays the same size, it seems like an awesome deal.

The screen wasn't mentioned in the press notification, so I guess it stays the same size.

I think if I got this, my hands would cramp up more than they already do playing Mario Kart.

I need one of those pelican adapters so I can hold my DS like a regular controller.

That is exactly the kind of redesign I didn't want... looks like the problems aren't remedied, in fact, they look amplified (buttons too close to the outer edge of the thing).

That's a problem you can't solve I think. The smaller the hardware gets the nearer the buttons will be to the edge when the screen should stay the same size.

I think there is no need for anybody who already has one to buy the DS lite anyway. The original DS is good enough and they will still sell it parallel to the lite version.

So no need to worry.

Is this new DS lite gonna come in different colors or the same colors as the regular DS?

The Nintendo homepage doesn't speak about the colors.
The pic shows it in white.
Was the white version sold in the US? I got mine in Japan.

I'm sure there will be other colors.

The only thing that bothered me about the original DS was the thickness. I guess this new one solves that problem at the expense of the buttons being closer like mentioned before.

ehh. personally, the only thing they could of done to improve the DS was make the buttons bigger.

I'm quite fond of the buttons as they are now...
It could be a little lighter in weight, and they'll improve it there, but I won't buy a DS lite in the near future. Like the GB micro, I'll wait for a cheap used one.

And as you can see, the buttons are not nearer to the edge as they were before.

If I didn't have one yet, I'd definitely buy the lite version, although it's a bit more expensive.

I hope the Lite version has PictoChat Version 2 in it.

DS Lite will come in 3 different colors.

That's a shame though that the GBA games stick out. Besides that it would be almost flawless.

They stick out about 1/4" that's not something that detracts from it at all in my opinion.

EDIT: On closer inspection, I don't think the GBA cart shown in the IGN images is fully inserted... it may just barely stick out.

The text on the image says that it sticks out 1cm. That's just over 3/8".

Not a big deal to me. The fact that original GB games stick out of the GBA seems to pose no problems. Plus, I don't own any GBA games anyway.

They don't get in the way, but they do stick out a good lot. Which is not to say it's a bad thing, actually it more or less confirms that the GBA games sticking out ever so slightly will be no issue at all. If the big honkin GB games don't get in the way in the GBA/SP

DS Lite sold out in a matter of hours!

The first shipment of Nintendo DS Lites was sold out in almost all video game stores across Japan in a couple of hours (or just minutes).
Since Nintendo wasn't taking preorders people camped outside stores and made up rows of up to 500 people.
E.g. Yodobashi Camera (a really really big store in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward, who should have thousands of units) was sold out of DS Lite on 8:20am! That's 20 minutes from opening!
Nintendo is planning to produce 650.000 units of DS and DSlite in March. Nintendo are using their capacities to the full, but still can't meet the high demand for their DS.

Wow! I can't believe they sold out that fast. Sounds like very good news for Nintendo.

well you know that this means that the original ds's price will probably drop as i don't even have one and I'll probably just get the normal one because i barely even know what the original looks like and i just need one...fast. i'm missing out on so many good games for it!

I also want a DS but it doesn't matter if it's the normal or the smaller version.

I want to get the ice blue one, so I can play games against my friends (who are all too cheap to buy their own).

Also it'd be fun to use the chat part so my friends and I can be childish remarks about people that we don't like (and see what it takes to make my husband's jaw to drop). I have to offend someone; it's my job as an american.
