Early Survival Horror
Hey, anybody know of any survival horror games for the NES? The only one I know of is Sweet Home (AWESOME game, just awesome).
And they need to be good.
Chiller doesn't count.
Ha ha ha.
I'll email it to you as soon as I finish it. Just PM me from now on.
Well, the CLOSEST I can come up with for survival horror on the NES would be
Maniac Mansion. It seems like it would fit the best in that genre, if you had to pick a game. It's more cartoonish, but that's about all I can think of. It's a really good game, though. If you haven't played it, I suggest checking it out.
Anyone played the follow up to
Maniac Mansion on the PC; Day of the Tentacle? That's one of the funniest games I ever played. Lucas Arts sure were the kings of piont and click adventures.
Anyway back on topic... er can't think of any.
yeah, if you're looking for Splatterhouse on the NES, you're SOL.
besides
Maniac Mansion, i'd recommend
Shadowgate. might be more of an RPG than you're looking for, but it's definitely horror and survival.
Friday the 13th sucks, btw
Probably Sweet Home. Even though i did not like it that much. And probably Splatterhouse but its hard as hell to find.
they made splatterhouse on the NES? i didn't think they did.
for some reason when i was trying to think of horror games,
Rescue: The Embassy Mission came to mind. anyone else into that game?

Hmmm never heard of that. I might have to check into it sometime.
Rescue the Embassy? Hrm. Never heard of it. I'll have to poke around.
Splatterhouse?! That was a Saturn game. Or was the Saturn game a port?
I loved Sweet Home, though. As the inspiration for Resident Evil, it will always have a special place in gaming history, and also for being the only(?) NES game to get a mature rating... or did it just have warning labels? I don't think ESRB was around back then. Anyway, it had so many innovative game features, as well as developed graphics (The zombie has a MOVING HAND! IN battle! Wow!), I was just hoping there was another NES game like it... Well, it's okay to dream, right?
I first played Splatter house on the TG-16, I don't know when it was released on the TG, but it was pretty much dead by '91, so I know the game is at least that old.
Splatterhouse had a decent sequel. But the 3rd Splatterhouse was the best in the series.
yeah, but it's not a horror game genre-wise. Only theme-wise.
Well, you're out of luck then, man. Sweet Home is just about it.
And who the hell said "Rescue"?! That's an "espionage" game, I guess. You sneak into a building and shoot terrorists. Survival horror? Cripes.
Only other horror game I can think of is Uninvited. Check it out. Used to scare the hell out of me when I was little. A friend and I just recently went through it. Good game. Lots of atmosphere.

yeah, i know Rescue isn't survival horror. like i said, it just came to mind for some reason and i brought it up. however, playing it does give me the same kind of tense feeling because of the terrorists jumping out at you and and it creates nice dimly-lit atmosphere. it's not a horror game, but for me it creates the same feeling.
Yeah, I guess you're right, Zombie. Thanks for the tip about Uninvited, though; I love
Shadowgate! (And stuff like it)
So how about SNES horror? There's this one game I played a long time ago, I can't remember the name...
Clocktower?
No, (though that was a cool game) I want to say it was a top-down, though at an angle(?!) I only have vague memories of it. (Heck, it might not be a survival horror, though I believe it was. I played it a LONG time ago.)
Something to do with scientists...
The last boss was a dragon?
EDIT: Shadowrun! THAT'S what I was thinking of!
Well, I've played Clocktower on the PSOne, and that's DEFINITELY survival horror... as a matter of fact, it's one of the better ones, in my opinion. Scissorman is pretty menacing, and I like his theme music. I thought it was really cool the way you pick up certain things around the rooms to throw at him, or hide under beds and what-not.
Oh, sorry, I meant to ASK what game I was thinking of... yeah, Clock tower was a survival horror. But wait, was the PSOne Clock Tower just a port of the SNES one? It sounds like the same plot.
PS: Howsabout that new game, Haunting Ground? Plays like Resident Evil, EXACT same plot as clock tower, but with a dog!
Well i played clock tower on snes. Its okay but its just a little too slow for my taste. And the Psone version isnt a port, different game but with scissor man still in it.
But is it a similar plot, or radically different like CT III?
Well i havent played the Psone but my friend loves the games and from what he says. Id say its similar in plot basicly. I heard the 3rd game uses weapons and what not. If you ask me that would kill the game bad.
You can check out reviews for Clock Tower 2 on Gamefaqs.com. Or search google and try to find websites on it.
'' for PC is generally considered as the first REAL "Survival Horror" game ever produced. Lots of earlier games had elements of "horror" in them. but do not play as what I would call true survival horror.
'' is the game that introduced the genre to the world.
I've never even heard of 'Sweet Home' (I think it was by Konami), most likely a game never released in the USA. I guess that's another thing that I need to check out.
Resident Evil borrowed heavily from both Alone in the Dark and Sweet Home to create what is currently accepted as "survival horror" now.
True but i wouldnt classify them as survival horrow anymore. Id say games like Siren ,Silent Hill and Fatal Frame take that name now. RE is nothing more than an action game now IMO.
Yeah, Resident Evil wasn't that scary. Silent Hill 2, on the other hand, seriously ****s with your head. That pyramid/meat headed guy was INSANE. that and the psychological thing with Pyramid Guy and the multi legged thing...
Alone in the Dark was really the first 'modern' survival horror. In my opinion, it had more in common with Silent Hill, because it was heavily psychological (not in the ****ed up way that SH was, though. AITD used things like fixed camera angles in certain areas to create a scary, cinematic feel.)
Resident Evil, on the other hand, heavily borrowed from Sweet Home. Sweet Home, or Suito Homu, was released in Japan at the exact same time as the movie, which also was never released here (no big loss; the movie was pretty much the Japanese version of Poltergeist). No one's sure which was based off which, the movie or the game. It doesn't really matter, because the game had a far more original plot. In it, a small party of researchers entered the home of a deceased, famous painter to try and find three murals painted by the artist. Once inside, they are trapped by the artist's vengeful ghost, and all hell breaks lose, eventually ending in a battle with the ghost herself.
Gameplay-wise, it was just
Dragon Warrior, but with several very unique plot elements (for example; you split up your goup into parties of at most three people. You can switch between them at any time and use them to explore the mansion and help each other. During battle, one party can call the other over to help).
I'm not sure if this was resolved earlier, I don't think so. But..
Splatterhouse was not released officially on the NES, it was however released for the Famicom. It carries a title like "Wanpaku Graffiti". However, it is quite different from the other splatterhouses you know. In this one you are a young kid with a butch knife. It is filled with parodies and humor. It is very light hearted when compared to the arcade game of Splatterhouse.
