Worst RPGS
Welcome to the NES Files, cmrun1.
The best RPG:
Dragon Warrior
The worst RPG: Quest 64
Man, this is a tough one! I think what I'll do is run through games I like and don't... maybe. I'll concentrate on the NES, since I don't know too much about RPG's later than that minus a few, which I'll probably mention.
The Ultima Series - Alright, I thoroughly enjoy
Exodus and Avatar, especially Avatar! Quest of the Avatar is such a rockin' game! There are many different party combos that you could end up with depending on who you decide to take with you. It makes it fun that way, making last minute, on the spot decisions. Also, if you don't know the order and different answers at the beginning of the game, you end up with a different class as the hero of the game. I thought this was really innovative, though it may have been done before, I don't know.
Exodus had a cool, REALLY old school feel to it. It's still very nostalgic for me to play this. It's one of the first RPGs I ever went through... I love it! As for the one that was released after Avatar (I can't even remember the name of it), I thought it was the dumps. I hated the way everything looked, and the whole feel to it. It's definitely one of my least favorite RPGs.
The
Dragon Warrior Series - Now this is where I got my start into RPGs. Although it's EXTREMELY outdated, and was BEHIND it's time, the first
Dragon Warrior still has a special place in my heart. I play it every now-and-then to rehash it, and I still enjoy it. Parts II, and III, I never made it all the way through, though I almost finished part II. I really liked both of those games, and highly recommend them. I've never even emulated part IV, so I don't have a real opinion on that one. I've heard that it rocks, though.
Final Fantasy - What can I say? This game is really fun, though I think dweller would disagree with me! I actually stayed up one day and night and went through the entire game in one sitting (I did take eating and potty breaks, however)! It's the ONLY RPG I've done that with, so that's gotta say something for it. However, I would recommend playing the first FF on one of the newer releases. There are a few bugs on the original that are no longer there. Things like ineffective attacks and buying more than one potion at a time are fixed.
Kemco-Seika - They made a great trilogy type of games, though weren't really a trilogy.
Shadowgate,
Deja Vu, and Uninvited are must plays! Really good games! They are text based adventures, but with pics in front of you for visuals.
These are just a few here. There are more. Check 'em out!
There's a weird RPG on the Famicom Disc system about Cleopatra and from what I heard, it sucks.
No healing items or such and in the last battle you have to have full health in order to survive... I haven't played it myself, though...
I will avoid mentioning the "Text Only" RPG's from the Apple IIc era, but I will mention 'Wizardry'. It's just too slow and dull (like most of the one-step-at-a-time first-person dungeon crawlers).
'Black Onyx' is horrid as well, but at least the dungeon crawling is quicker.
At least 'Quest 64' has colorful 3-D graphics. That's a little something going for it.
There was one about Christopher Columbus also. I don't see how much gaming can be used from that kind of content.
id say bards tale and earthbound. I just couldnt get into those games for some reason. Just not fun to me.
Speaking in terms of NES only, I had a tough time getting into . The interface was so slow that it was a chore trying to do.. well, much of anything.
I don't know about the worst ever, but as for the worst I've played:
Deadly Towers.
Hmm...since I haven't played all the RPGs, I can't say what is the worst. But I can say Quest 64 wasn't really bad. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad.
Those might and magic type games on snes were also bad. I couldnt stand the first person dynamic of it for a rpg and it just wasnt that great to me.
Best Lunar Silver Star

Yes! i'm also a huge fan of the Ultima series on the NES systems!
(btw, does anyone know if there's a site out there dedicated to the NES system Ultimas? most Ultima fans are hardcore computer gamers who scoff at the console versions)
Ultima Avatar and
Metal Gear have my votes for best RPGs on the 8-bit nes. The Great thing about Ulitma is it's totally non-linear and there's no leveling up (although you do have a save a fair amount of cash). i gave up playing RPGs because of games like Crono Trigger and FFVll; i got so sick of them dragging you around by the nose.
Ultima Avatar you start out and can go just about anywhere in the world and can do just about anything. you figure everything out and build your characters how you want. there's so much to do and so much to figure and solve that it makes the game hard as hell (well, maybe not so much hard as time consuming). none of that plotline and characters having a personality crap that games are full of these days.
I really want to love Ultima Warriors of Destiny but i think that might be one of the worst RPGs on the NES. the graphics took a huge step back in WoD, the sound is terrible and the night-cycle makes the game one of the most frustrating things you could ever try to play. i'd rate the nes Ultimas as follows:
1Quest of the Avatar
2False Prophet (good stuff!)
3Black Gate (fun, but too bad they made it a pseudo-action game)
4
Exodus(good for it's time, unplayable these days)
5Warriors of Destiny
6Runes of Virtue 2 (huge disappointment if you love the ultima games, might be good if you're just looking for an action/puzzle/quest game)
To get on the topic of this post, terrible NES RPGs include Hylide, Heroes of the Lance and Times of Lore.
i never checked the TSR style games like Bards Tale, Hillsfar, Pool of Radiance.
Dungeon Magic is a great 1st person game but very very hard.
Not too many bad NES RPGs for the 8-bit...i rented Faria a couple times and it seemed solid.
Shadowgate and
Deja Vu are good. FF1 and
Crystalis are great. i don't like the direction
Dragon Warrior IV took, but you can't go wrong with that series.
The SNES...
i heard Drakken sucked. FF mystic quest is pretty weak. Y's 3 is rockin' but way too easy (btw, it's worth getting a converter and tracking down Y's 4 and Ys 5 if you have the chance or buy a turbo duo and pick up Y's1-2 + 4).
The Breath of Fire series is boring and generic but most people seem to like them. It seems like so few RPGs were being released in the US for the SNES (compared to Japan) that anything Nintendo crapped out people claimed was gold.
I'm not a fan of the FF games for the SNES. i heard Lufia is good but never played it...Super Mario RPG is the epitome of the kind of RPGs i hate.
The RPGs on the SMS and TG16 range from good to spectacular, although some of them (like Cosmic Fantasy 2 and Miracle Warriors) are pretty archaic these days.
the N64 didn't have any besides the
Zelda games, Quest 64 and Aidyn Chronicles.
i don't know anything about newer system RPGs.
i'd reckon that all of the ones Working Designs made for the Saturn and PSX kick ass.
Thats a very nice indepth post. I highly suggest you try games like Baldurs gate and Baldurs gate 2 for the pc NOT console of course. Very in depth games that dont drag you around the nose HARDLY AT ALL. and you can create up to 6 chars and make their classes, alighnments things like that.
