3rd Person Shooters
How many 3rd person shooters games where there for NES that moved the screen move vertically not horizontal. Im trying to remember a game I played when I was little. Im not sure how many 3rd person shooters there are that move up.
hmmmmm....
If you're talking about "shmups," then most of the shooters on the market were side-scrolling, or were side-scrolling/vertical.
Some of the ones that were vertical would be
Legendary Wings, and
Dragon Spirit (two of my fav shooters). Most of them were combined, however. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but if you could be more descriptive, I'm sure one of us could help you.
It was vertical/side-scroll and
Contra reminds me of it. I dont know exactly what "shmups" are. B 3rd person shooter i mean like halo is first person and this would be 3rd person.
What about FPS's? I'd love to see Wolfenstein for NES. I'm probably dreaming.
I was looking through games and I think it might have been Ikari Warrios. Either way i loved the game when i played it.
Wolfenstein 3D was released on the SNES, it's terribly low res, and doesn't look too impressive, although the fact that you can play Wolf 3D on a home console is nice.

Didn't they remove all the Nazi storyline though? I'm pretty sure it's a made-up enemy. I also remember the dogs were replaced with giant rats. The game is HEAVILY censored, but then they released Doom on the SNES. Go figure...
As for the topic, SNK made lots of games like that. You could add all the Ikari Warriors and
Iron Tank to the list.

yeah, you pretty much got it, I only stated that to show how much
POWer it taked to run a FPS, DOOM on the SNES was TERRIBLE, ~10 FPS even on the most simple areas.
"Shumps" is plural for really idiotic people. You see someone who is acting like an idiot and you say "Knock it off you shmup!"
A "shooter" or "shoot-em-up" on the other hand, is a genre of gaming. All of them are "third-person". The "first-person shooter" (FPS) is whole specific genre title on its own, so when someone is referring to "shooters" (correctly) it usually means "third-person".
As for '
Contra' style shooters for NES, I immediately think of 'S.C.A.T.' although that one is mainly side view.
"Vertical" has me thinking of 'Ikari Warriors' or '
Heavy Barrel', although those games could pass as simply straight forward "Action". Usually when someone says "shooter", I think of automatically scrolling games.
...
As for "FPS" on the NES, the closest thing we've got is the mazes from 'Golgo-13'. There's just not much dimension to games like that simply because the NES can't handle it.
Then again, you could technically consider any "zapper" game to be a "first-person shooter" (but we's know better).
Don't forget the boss levels in
Fester's Quest. Those were "first person", and frustrating as hell; aimlessly wandering a maze of completely identical hallways...
You can try
Heavy Barrel as ZEN Mentioned, and also a game called Thunder Birds.
Im pretty sure t was either Ikari Warriors or Guerilla War im going to have to play them both.
Go play them, then confirm it (so I can finally get some sleep).
