Any game who's value or reputation seems lower than your own personal "rating" of it.
UNDERRATED:
1.
M.C. Kids
Superb level design, perfect playability, and just an all around joy to play. It was unjustly accused of in-game advertising (all I see are the "arches") and somehow that's supposed to affect gameplay (idiotic critics).
2. E.T.
The "worst game ever made"! (Not counting the other 4,000 much worse games.)
3. Ikaruga
The greatest and most ingenius shooter ever has to take a backseat to 'Asteroids'.
4.
Friday the 13th
It's not even that bad. Did you people ever play 'Darkman'? At least this game is still "playable" (and so is 'E.T.').
5. Zero Wing
The second most ingenius shooter claims dishonor as "the worst translated game ever". Somehow that also affects "gameplay" (much like in-game advertising).
6. Phantasy Star IV
This was Sega's '
Final Fantasy III (6)' and deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence.
7. Blackthorne
Overlooked SNES title. Precursor to 'Oddworld'. Maybe just "overlooked" but deserves to be named a classic.
8. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Dubbed as a mediocre NES movie game, it stands as one of the few adventures that changes every time you play it.
9. Fire 'N Ice
Simply the greatest puzzle game ever! No one seems to care.
10. Landstalker
See 'Fire N' Ice' (but change "puzzle" to "adventure").
SHABOOM!

Again, I'll only comment on what I've played...
M.C. Kids was much better than expected, considering it's a McDonalds game. It plays quite smoothly and the levels are all interesting.
E.T. ... well, I disagree there, E.T. is terrible which is not to say that there aren't worse games, but it deserves it's title.
Ikaruga is the best shooter I've ever played though. switching colours/polarity was the greatest idea ever, as simple as it may seem, it makes the game infinitely more fun than most shooters.
what I would consider to be underrated...
Kickle Cubicle, it's a great puzzle game I was completely
Hooked on it for a while.
As it seems that this question isn't limited to
NES Games,
I'd say Luigi Mansion from Gamecube. The ratings were good in Germany, but my personal rating was still higher.

All of these games here ^, I have played (minus Blackthorne). I would have to agree with you on all of them. It seems alot of people around the Files actually realize the greatness that is Ikaruga.
I love Fire 'n Ice, also. Matter of fact, I was just chatting with somebody about that last night! It's a pretty innovative puzzle game, with a unique way that you have to place your blocks (diagonally down is the only way).
Friday the 13th - What can I really say about this but... I love this game! It's so fun to go through!
I'll have to look into this.. Blackthorne... I'm an Oddworld fan myself...
Me personally, I add
Karnov. No one seems to appreciate this game. I'm still finding hidden objects and places to blow up with bombs to this day! Now that's replayability!

If you recommend that so much I might give it a try.

As much as I wanted to hate it, I too found this game to be very good. I thought the sections where you play upside down were very clever.
Hylide. Many people I know thought it sucked, but I found it to be quite enjoyable. Maybe it's just the pure simpleness of the game that attracts me, but I do find it appealing for some reason.

lol i also liked
Friday the 13th ok some games underrated would be....
The Elder scrolls 3 Morrowind for one
and i liked bible aventures for nes
Bible Adventures???
Never heard of such one. Seems interesting. I have to get some info on that from my friend google.
I'd have nice ideas for that sort of game: Run around and find commandments (10 of them) in different levels.
Luigi's Mansion is a good call. Great game, little recognition. For the NES, Super Dodge Ball (check out the cool new sig I made tonight!) and Little Samson are games the casual video gamer probably doesn't know about, but should. How about systems? The Neo Geo Pocket Color never got its due, but it was an awesome handheld. Oh, and ET is neither "underrated" NOR "playable". "Worst game ever" is a tough call, but it's gotta be up there.
That is so funny. I like the face of the guy when he's hit by the ball.
i've played little samson (i beat it). that is a great game. i dont know how people feel about mario 1, usually people tell me they're bored of it. but i love that game.
Seems that just about everyone who's played Little Sampson thinks it's great. Trouble is, it's a rare game so not many people have played it.
i have it for my emulator. i want to try to find an actual cartrige somewhere though.
My girlfriend got me a mint copy of Little Samson on eBay for $20.50 (including shipping). Great great game. Of course, you guys can always check out the
NES ROM on my site.
And WHO liked Bible Adventures? Seriously, that game is AWFUL.
Manuel, Bible Adventures was made by a crappy company called Wisdom Tree that made terrible games that "taught" the bible. Wisdom Tree was the Christian themed "branch" of a company called Color Dreams that ALSO made crappy games, although not religious in nature. None of these games were licensed. Wisdom Tree's games came in baby blue cartridges, and Color Dreams' carts were black, kinda similar to Tengen's.
Thanks for the info.
Bible Adventures... only reading the name makes me laugh.
bible adventures sounds like a crappy game. but i've actually heard of a mario 3 game in a baby blue cart. did that company remake it or something?
No, it was probably a pirate or some kind of generic version of the game, but, Color Dreams could have been the company to do this.
oh. i just figuered, you know, with the color of the cart and all... but nevermind
It wasn't the Japanese version. The Japanese cart was yellow.
Perhaps that was really a pirate edition or something.
Shadow is half-right. Color Dreams had already changed their name once to Bunch Games, to try and get their games into stores. Nintendo had apparently told stores that these games by Color Dreams were not "official" Nintendo games, and were therefore lower in quality. When games by Bunch Games wasn't going as planned, someone at Color Dreams gave the idea to make church oriented games... They started publishing under the name Wisdom Tree, and making all church-type games. Some of them were just older Color Dreams games with graphics changed.
When there are church games, are there games of other religions, too?
(This is a serious question)
I think of "Super Jihad Fighters" or such.
(That's not so serious)
I'm not sure about games for other religions, but I have the PAL game Noah's Ark which is actually pretty fun. I don't think it's really a Christianity game as such, it's just that it uses the Noah's Ark theme in a clever way by making the water rise up the screen as you go through the levels.
Wasn't Noah's Ark just a hack of Castle Wolfenstein 3D?
??? Doubt it but then I haven't played Castle Wolfenstein. I'm talking about this game by Konami:

Dude i thought bible adventures was pretty cool id sit there on the noah level and go and find two of evry animal and the snakes would hide and the bulls and stuff would attack lol it was different
FALSE! all of the Wisdom Tree games I've seen have been in black carts, and I've seen Color Dreams carts of both colours.
Are you sure? My friend has a complete Wisdom Tree collection and they're all baby blue. Color Dreams I could be wrong on. I've only seen one of their cartridges, and it was black.
LITTLE SAMSON!!!!!!!1111111111111111
my friend has a complete Joshua, it's black. I guess the used both colours for all of their games....
you guys must be young and don't truly remember some of the best games on nes
In no particular order:
1.
Bionic Commando - great military style shooting game, you had a mechanical arm you could swing on things with.
2.
Shadowgate - Made by Kemco-Seika, point and click game that pretty much started this genre.
3.
Deja Vu - Made exactly like
Shadowgate with a different story
4. Uninvited - same as number 2 and 3
5.
Battle of Olympus -
Zelda-esque action rpg set in greek mythology
6.
XexYZ - this game was an awesome adventure-shooter
7.
Maniac Mansion - WHOA, this game rocked my world, point and click puzzle solving adventure.
8. Star Soldier - space age shooter game, awesome!
9.
Super Mario Bros. 2 - Why is this game the outcast?? It's easily the most creative one with 4 playable characters and awesome bosses.
10.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link The Adventures of Link - Also the outcast in the
Zelda Series, It was great and i loved the action of it more than
Zelda 1. I've been a fan of
Zelda for almost 17 yrs and i still love playing this game as much as a link to the past.
Give me some feedback! Let me know what you think.
link 2 - AWSOME game! i own it for my nes, im really far into it.
mario 2 - another great game. i beat it to many times. i need it to refule its "fun" meetor
Battle of Olympus - i havent played a lot, but from what i have played, it looks like a really good game. (in fact, it kind of reminds me of link 2!)
-this game i have on emulator-
not to be "under rating" the game, but i really did not like
Bionic Commando. i have that on an emulator, it is weirdly hard and... weird.
he's like a robotic army inspector gadget type person, that clings to platforms and shoots people. (and i beleive after being shot once you die. (or twice, either way, thats cheap)

Ah... the more you get into the game, the more energy you get. You should invest more time into it, you'd probably really like it.
2.
Shadowgate - Made by Kemco-Seika, point and click game that pretty much started this genre.
Was
Shadowgate really underrated? It was rated quite good here in Germany.
Yeah,
Shadowgate was popular enough to warrant
Shadowgate 64 and a re-release of the original on GBC. I don't think it was underrated.
Deja Vu and Uninvited, (ESPECIALLY Uninvited) did get overlooked, though. When I was a little kid, I remember Uninvited being the first SCARY game I had experienced. Great title.

I recently got
Bionic Commando, but I haven't played it very much. It's certainly an interesting title, and one I'll have to play through soon. It just takes a bit of play to get into it.
Deja Vu... Where to start with that one... I love this style of game. Unfortunately it doesn't play so smoothly on the NES due to the D-pad... I still love the game and was playing it just a few days ago. My only real problem is that I'm impatient and don't like waiting when I have to move the cursor all the way across the screen.
Never got to play it. Might be something worth checking out. Might track down a
NES ROM.
My bid on eBay is at 1 Euro now. 1d7hrs remaining.
...
Sorry I havent posted in I while, but Ive been havin some problems and after thursday u may not see my posts for a while, but on the subject. The most underated games I think r
Jaws,
Friday the 13th,
Godzilla, Karate Kid and as others have said
M.C. Kids was actually a good game.
...
Yes, if you clip the lockout chip in the NES it should load up just fine. if it was a Famicom game, you'd also need a 60 - 72 pin adaptor.
...
to disable the lockout chip, follow this guide: I've done it on my console. It was extremely easy with very little risk as long as you're careful.
...
that would depend on what 60 - 72 pin adaptor you get, if it has the chip on it, then no, if it's just a straight pin-for-pin adaptor, then yes. I'd say just clip it, it really doesn't harm anything, and I think there are... two games that don't work without it, both unlicenced. Also, if it's a huge issue, and you want it to be completely universal you could install a switch.
in one position the chip is disabled, in the other the chip is completely functional. it's something I've been planning for a while now but haven't gotten around to doing.
...
Yes, installing the switch would take soldering.
as for adaptors with the chip... I haven't used any adaptors at all, so I wouldn't really be able to advise on that...
...
Making a universal NES is so easy??
Back in the time when the NES was still new, they took horrendous prices for making the NES consoles compatible with US games. And all for cutting one lousy pin...
Ufouria is one of the best
NES Games ever made, i totally love this game,it's such a shame they did't meke a serie outta this one, also Hammerin'Harry is a fun game too and it's a PAl only release.
Ufouria with a very funny character Hebereke (I love it/him).
I don't think it was underrated, though. Good ratings nearly everywhere.
Odd. The actual "review" sounded negative, yet the final score is high.
'Ufouria' is a decent game. It doesn't quite rank up there with
Metroid but certainly a worthwhile
NES ROMp. It's more of an "underplayed" game rather than underrated.
Perhaps this is so.
As for me, I like it more than
Metroid.
...

Well there are also two S
NES Games released in Europe with the Ufouria character. But I think those games are puzzle games.
My vote for most underrated game goes to the Adventures of Rad Gravity, followed by Low G Man,
Solstice and Totally Rad.
I think the most Underated game is the Little Mermaid for the NES. The level design is great. And the gameplay was great! The bosses were easy but memorerable. The games was short, but great.
One of the games I loved (but don't own) is Kick Master. It's something very like
Ninja Gaiden.
dont know if this is has been mentioned or not cause im to lazy to read through all threads but.
Lufia the fortress of doom
Lufia II rise of the sinistrals
Super Turrican
Mega Turrican
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Man, I wish I would've thought of this game for this thread! Definitely under-rated... maybe even a little unknown. I hadn't even heard of this game when I saw it in my local shop. I went on instinct and purchased it... I was most certainly not disappointed! I love the way you level up your kicks on the game. The enemies are cool, and the level design is great. Man, good call dude!
You mean Kick Master isn't some crappy Soccer game!? damnit! I've passed that one up in a shop about 5 times now! I didn't even look at the label, just the top of the cart... damnit!
Kickmaster
Point proven.
Kick master was a great game. Very challenging and fun. And i think Roth mentioned the level design in that game was great and i aggre whole hearditly with that.
I look backed at the first page, and I agree that
M.C. Kids was underated. The game was great. I loved getting the blocks, and putting them in the empty spaces. The game play was great, and the boards were unique.
I also haven't heard of Kickmaster... it really could be some sort of soccer game. But it could also be a Kung-Fu game, guessing from the name...
Thanks for the hint, I'll check that one out.
I will add ummm......The Ecco The Dolphins.
Viewtiful JOe's
Grand Theft Auto (Damn i hate this GAme and i was only Kidding.)
Jurassic PArk For Genesis
Blaster Master
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers(TV show and Nes game)
Skittles because they don't have chocolate.
Jurassic PArk For Genesis
That game is absolutely terrible... the controls suck, the graphics suck, it's just all around not a fun experience...
Oh yeah right your just bad at it if you know how it rocks.
oh yeah i dont know if anyones mentioned this yet but you guys should REALLY check this game out.
Flying Warriors.
And luke i aggre so much with you on jurrasic park for genisis. I dont understand why people like it but i hated the controls and that game was WAAAAY to sluggish for me.
Oh yeah, one of my favorite games of all time, how could I forget...
Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The music was awesome, the boss battles were sweet and the levels addicting. However, it is one of those love it/hate it games.
!
Rabidshark, you keep talking about games that I love as well. I can never seem to think of any to post on... d*mn!
Here's one that most will disagree with me on, though.
Silver Surfer.
Man, I love playing this game even though I TOTALLY suck at it. I love the music to it (Tim Follen;
Solstice, Target:
Renegade)! It gets me goin' and wanting to play it more! The difficulty is rather high, but one of these days I'll conquer that game!!!
Hrm...I wonder if Roth will like this one.
A Boy and His Blob: Trouble in Blobolonia. Very odd gameplay. You use jellybeans to transform your buddy, a blob, into various household objects. There's something that makes me laugh every time about the blob missing the jellybean and frowning. The only game produced and released by Absolute Entertainment for the NES. Also, it somehow has an unofficial, unrefined feel to it, but this doesn't detract at all from gameplay.
That, and the beginning screen is a big spoof of Indiana Jones.
i didnt much really like that
Godzilla game rabid was talking about . Most of the
Godzilla games were crap to me but i havent tried the new ones yet. Are they any good?
Somebody mentioned KickMaster!
It's the first one in my "Crazy Game Ad" series.
I really have never heard of Kickmaster. Maybe I'll check it out.
Sega Saturn, itself.
How are those "underrated"?
The original was getting GameCube "Game of the Year" honors.
