Game of the Week 46/2006: Dragon Warrior

In Dragon Warrior

What should one say much about Dragon Warrior... it's good.
Thus it's the new Game of the Week.

Dragon Quest was and still is a very good RPG. I played it on an emulator first some years ago. And although I didn't understand much Japanese yet, the music and athmosphere of the game drew me into it.
Years later I want Dragon Quest VIII... I need a PS2...

As usual, let's have a look at cart and box art:
Japan:

USA:

And again the question, which art style do you like better?

I don't remember too much about this game, I only played it to completion once. From what I remember, I liked it, but the leveling up was very tedious (whether more so than Final Fantasy, I can't remember).
For some reason, one enemy stands out to me after all those years: Gold Man. I don't know why.
As for the box art, this time the US wins. The dragon kind of looks a little goofy on the Japanese one.

I REALLY disliked both box art designs. I've never liked Dragonball-style anime artwork, and the US cover art was just crap. Not Megaman-worthy crap boxart, but still.

As for the game itself, great game, but TEDIOUS. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the GBC versions liven up the gameplay considerably. The menu/interaction system on the first two was mind numbing.

Awesome game for sure :) This was the first RPG I had ever been through, and I still go through it every now-and-then. I'm actually getting ready to start another file on it soon. The US box art rocks over the Japanese art. That just looks too... blah. Nice pick.

Good early RPG but it is very repetitive and I have no desire to play it again really. Much prefer Dragon Warrior IV. Never played DWIII and stopped playing DWII because it reminded me too much of the first game!

From what I have played of Dragon Warrior it's a pretty Solid Game. I like the Anime Box art better. Thanks for the Thread Manuel. I may go and play DW!

You know, now that I think about it, I never finished the sequel.

I got to the ship, but it's just so freaking open ended at that point that I could never figure out where to go. Even when I played the GBC version and was given the damned strategy guide, I couldn't find the right island.

Stupid island.

Has anyone here tried the Dragon Warrior Monster games? I remember I use to own one for GBC way back when. I wouldn't checking them out agine they were really fun!

Check out the Dragon Warrior Monster thread.

I love it, especially since I recently started up on emulator and bred a godlike Dracolord.

I'd prefer it on the GBC, but my cart glitches out constantly. I don't want to lose everything all over again.

Haven't ever played any of the Dragon Warrior series. I think I'll start a game up after I finish Final Fantasy VI (US III) for the millionth time.

A fantastic RPG. I received this one through Nintendo POWer’s best promotion ever. All you had to do was start a subscription or renew your subscription, and they’d send you Dragon Warrior for free. At the time, I was skeptical that they were actually giving away a free NES game, but I was going to renew anyway. I was Hooked when I got it, and they included some bonuses with the game too. There was a laminated card that had a chart with columns indicating Level, Spell, Towns you should visit, Enemies you should fight, etc. I never dared to travel further than the card told me to. There was at least one more bonus item with the game, and I think it was some extra maps, but it escapes me right now.

I was so excited when I killed my first gold slime and raked in all that gold. They would always run from you, but that time I got lucky. I believe I had a critical hit, which killed him off. I loved how deep the final castle seemed to go. Just simple square rooms, but those stairs just seemed to go lower and lower and lower. I also thought it was so cool when you got to roam all over after you beat the game. That was something my other games never let me do before.
