New Server
Hello. I'd like to let everyone know that The NES Files forums(just forums.nesfiles.com) is now on a new server. This server should hopefully be faster. Please LMK if anyone sees any problems posting, reading, etc. Thanks.

Wow, it seems like there have been a lot of new things added recently! It's nice to be a part of forums that continually get better. Keep up the good work, Derek!
Yep-- we even have a new 'record' for forum guests, as the phpBB worm hits were counted towards the guest count a few minutes ago. I setup my block so they don't get counted. Of course my server was already patched, so nothing was damaged-- only needed about 2 minutes to get in, though-- BEWARE, anyone who has phpBB forums!!!

I have noticed a huge increase in speed, even on my crappy dialup connection. I used to get lots of timeout errors.
I just noticed that the NESfiles pages doesn't show the most recent post from the forums.
Also when I post, the screen goes white, and I have to use the back button to get back. And whatever I just posted, gets marked as not read. It used to mark your own as read when you posted.
the site seemed to be down a while ago, and I had some issues posting, I had to go back to the main page to get back to the boards.
also can't seem to edit my posts, but it gave me a white screen on that last post as well when I tried to submit it...
I've noticed some posting problems lately such as a white screen after submission, or no redirection. Not a real big deal, just sort of annoying.
Yes, so far, The NES Files forums are the only thing on this new server, and it's native Linux with MySQL/PHP, so it should be faster than the old MySQL/PHP on W2K3(which also hosts other sites). I'm glad people are seeing it faster...

OK. That may be a difference in Apache versus IIS. I know a guy who used to run phpBB forums and he had the same problem-- I'll drop him a line and see how he fixed it...

Hmmm... I guess I'll have to try posting a few messages to see if I can experience it, as well. Please keep posting, and let me know if problems go away-- it's technically possible that there could be some DNS issues, where your local clients get confused and try to go to the wrong server or something...

What browser are you guys using?

Derek
I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Can't stand all the security holes in IE, so I made the switch!
What browser are you guys using?
I'm using Internet Explorer
Apple Safari is my browser.

I just made a tweak in the forum code. Please let me know if anyone sees anything or if things seem to be fixed... Thanks.

still getting the white screen when I submit a post. Although one went OK so far today.
Same here. It seems as if sometimes it goes to a white screen, and sometimes it doesn't. I'll try and pay attention to what forums it happens on...
What does the white screen say? Is it really just a blank white screen???

OK. Tried another tweak. Gimme some feedback. Thanks.

Let's see if I have a white screen, too.
Btw I'm using Internet Explorer.
Yes, I also get a white screen after posting and there's no possibility to edit the post. If it stays this way we might have a Bowser or two here quite fast.

Yes, it's just a plain white screen, and as far as I know it's still happening, but this post will deterimine for sure.
yup. still happening.
I wish I could edit posts in this group, it would save driving the post count up without posting anything useful...

I still get the white screen as well. Also, it still shows up as if I haven't read the forum that I just posted on.

That's OK-- I've been deleting duplicate posts.

Can you take screenshots or something and Email me()? Screenshot your posting page, then click the submit button, and then screenshot again, and take a screenshot after every action after that if you could. Thanks.

Testing for the screenshot...

OK. I'm pretty sure I fixed it. I was able to re-create the problem by sending private messages, so I sent private messages to myself, until I figured out that phpBB wanted sendmail to be installed on my server. I had un-installed this, as it's a security risk and I plan on installing a different mail server in the future. I found an option in phpBB to use an external SMTP server for sending Emails, and that fixed it. Please test by posting regular messages, and LMK how well it works.
Thanks. Now I'm off to create a KB article at phpbb.com for others who may have the same problem...

Derek
well, so far it seems to be fixed
Excellent. Everyone should receive Email notifications now, too!

I'm not sure if this is on the server end, or my end, but this morning I logged in and was in the process of checking new posts when my browser crashed. When I reopened it all of the posts were showing as read.
Yeah-- the showing read thing kinda annoys me. I wish phpBB was smarter how it did that. I think it basically marks everything read if your session expires...

Derek
blah, you'd figure it would use cookies or something...
You'd think. But I guess they figured it'd be too much to track each message individually or something...
