Ranking Suggestions needed!

Hello. One of the features of the PHPBB message forums that currently isn't enabled is "rankings". This means that each user gets assigned some kind of title based up the number of posts they've ever made. On a couple other forums, I often see "grunt" for anyone under 50 posts, and then other names when people hit 50, 200, etc. I'm looking for ideas on ranking names, particularly with some sort of NES theme-- something from a game, a mix of games, etc. Please reply with any ideas. Well I don't have any ideas for the actual names, but be sure to really space out the ranks, and make them go on for a while.

rankings are a good idea, the more creative the titles are, the better. about how many member would you say this forum has?

You could do something like: Newbie, Level I, Level II, Level III, all the way to Level X. then after that They get the title Master. Then maybe Supierior, something along those lines. When they reach a high level such as master, and have been on the boards for awhile, then they can be looked at for being a moderator. What do you think?

That's about the basic idea-- I just hoped for a more NES-themed scale... As for being a moderator, I think I'll probably make that decision independent of number of posts(obviously no one of 'newbie' class), but I don't want people posting a bunch of senseless posts that add nothing to a conversation, just to get the post count... Thanks.

I know where you are going with the nes themed scale, but there doesnt really seem to be a set scale that is nes- related. It would be awkward to tell which is better, since people have different opinions on games and such.

Oh well-- maybe someone will have an idea. Otherwise, I'll probably implement with something boring eventually.

I haven't looked into it yet. With the forums at their current size and activity, it's not to useful yet. I'll let the forums grow a bit and then research what's available for phpBB. If you happen to know of a simple plug-in for phpBB for reputations, let me know, and I may implement sooner. Thanks.

It is possible! I saw a phpBB Board with a reputation feature enabled. Its some sort of plugin/code hack. Check google.com and type in phpBB adding reputation and you will find some info.

I can't find any reputation mods at . If you can LMK what board has it, I'll ask the boardmaster. Thanks.

^ I would go for the advanced karma one. You can probably edit the hack even further when it is installed with the language set.

Well, as far as ranking titles go, why not something basic? Something about video game difficulty levels. You could have a person called Very Easy. Then as you progress, it goes on to be Easy, Normal, Hard, then Very Hard. After that you could use classes such as Master, which was previously suggested. It sounds kind of corny, but it could actually lead to some hilarious comments!

I agree with the basic concept. That way people will know where-about a person is in status quickly and easily. I'm not sure about labeling somebody 'very easy' or 'very hard', but i do like the concept.

I agree with that, 'master' and other higher ups are cool, but difficulties simply called 'very easy' and stuff aren't cool, maybe something like Initiate or something, something RPG based would be cool, but it's somewhat difficult to directly link that to video games, and NES specifically.

Yeah, I guess the Very Easy thing isn't very cool, but something along those lines. There is a Filipino forum called that has something along those lines ( classes and what not ). What about an apprenticeship kind of deal. There can be NoVice, Apprentice, Gamer, Conqueror, then Master.

I like those above ranks, but I think there should be alot more, and have them spread out so that you cant go from rank to rank to rank in just a day or two.

Alright, now we're getting somewhere. How about we start another list-type thing here of words that sound as if they could work. Then we could put them into a good order of relevance according to how important the words sound.

I was also thinking maybe have different classes. Not just like RPG's, though (i.e. fighter, wizard, cleric ). Something more torwards all gaming. There could be Adventurer, Platformer, Puzzler, Strategist, Flight Commander, etc. Then within those classes is where the whole NoVice, Apprentice and such would take place. I think that would be a good way that people who visit the site could have a basic understanding of what types of games the individuals are drawn to. Just some ideas.

Oh, and if the above link gets torn down, my feelings wouldn't be hurt. I was just trying to use an example.

Well, i think the ranks should take a more linear approach OR we could do what another message board I know does. You can have the default set going, such as master ect.. or you can change it to something custom.

It would still be linear. Here's an example:

Name - User A
Title - Strategist
Rank - Apprentice

The title would be more of a 'this is basically what I'm into' kind of thing. Then the ranking denotes how much you interact with the site. Just an idea, though.

I don't believe the Title thing can be done with phpBB-- maybe with a mod, but I've had bad luck implementing some mods. I like the idea of creating a list of cool words for ranks. Once we have a good list, maybe I'll create a poll so we can vote on a ranking system. Thanks.

Why not implement something like they've got over at ?

They use a point system that is closely tied in with the number of posts made by users... You get so many points per post (thread) and so many points for replying and then the thread starter get so many pints for each reply...

In return for informative and useful posts you are awarded points that you can "spend" in the "ATS Store"... in this store you can "buy" things like custom titles, custom backgrounds, access to certain parts of the forum, ETC...

You might want to contact the webmaster to figure out how to implement something like this. (Or, I could ask for you)...

the only thing so far i dotn like is ive seen people with a good amount of posts in koopa troopa i think u should add more like a ranking per 50

it doesn't take that many posts to get past Koopa Troopa, just use your brain and think of things, the board has only been up a month and Roth and I both have over 600 posts, all of them quality relevant posts.

don't just expect to fly through the rankings.

yes lol i know that im just saying theres a guy who lives in germany on the board im sure you know him who has 200 and some post who is still a koopa troopa

Please, don't post garbage posts on the forums, faille. "me too" kinda posts, etc., add no new content and just clutter the forums. Please post only if you have a new idea of sorts to share. Thanks.

As I already stated somewhere before (hello, I'm the German guy), the ranking structure is good as it is now.
It is good to "stick" in a rank for some time. If you have a new rank every 50 posts, it will be no fun anymore.

But I have another question, which isn't relevant now, but could become relevant in the future.
Will "Bowser" be the end?
Should we make something above Bowser for e.g. 5000 posts?
And what could this be? Mario or something? (At least Mario always beats Bowser if everythings goes right. )

we could have bowser wario luigi bowser Megaman link and many others and u could have a poll determining which is better or which needs more posts to get to that level...

personally I'm fine with bowser being the top, I don't think you realize just how many posts 5000 is... I've been here a month, and only have 600 at this rate it'll be at least 8 months before I'm even close... I think we should just not worry about that until the time comes.

oh, you want to replace the Goomba and Koopa Troopa rankings? I'm pretty sure everyone here is cool with them as they are, the SMB enemies are pretty good icons, most games know them rather well. and they serve the purpose of ranking just nicely. it would be hard to get the same identification from Megaman enemies or really any other game for that matter. There was a fair bit of discussion on the topic actually.

unless yall already have ranks all the way to 5000 but what i mean is this. bowser or mario is 5000 and like evry few hundred or so before that is like Megaman wario luigi etc... i dont mean we should overdew all this work already put in i personally like it too...

Your rank is that little character from Super Mario Bros. that's below your username. If you didn't notice, when you first started out, you had a "Goomba" character. The rest is speculation, because I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but it depends on the # of posts you have what rank you are. As you can see, you're currently at the Koopa Troopa rank--I think that happens when you write your 20th post. The others are Lakitu, Hammer Brothers, & Bowser, and I'm not sure how you get those. At least one of them pertains to your 1000th post.

Hammer Bother is 1000, Bowser is 2000... which kind of puts us in a difficult position, since all of our rankings were SMB3, and the next level of ranking can't tie into the theme that well... I mean, we're the enemies! We can't be Karnov, or Mario, or Luigi... We woulda coulda shoulda made a lesser boss at 2000, like the turtle boss or baby bowser. Ah, well.

Don't worry, we don't put much emphasis on ranking here. It's just a fun little extra.

I spent quite a few hours, when I first came here, reading all of the old threads. Trying to aviod asking n00bish questions like that. And yet I still suceed(ed) in asking quite a few.

I would suggest the same to any newcomber..... Just try not to revive too many ancient threads. Even if you feel your input could change the outcome of the world or something

My "The German Guy" is not gaming related...
I think if you can choose a custom title you should be able to choose it freely. Since it's a gaming board naturally lots of people will choose gaming related titles I guess...

I'm not sure if this is the "reputation" item that was discussed at the very beginning of this topic, but another suggestion is for users to be able to "rank" each other. You can do this on another forum I post at. You click on the person's username and can rank the user on the quality of posts, help to other members, etc. It could be as simple as just stars, or tiny Karnov "K" signs (with the understanding that the system not get abused if it's implemented), thoughts?

They use post ratings on the Digg comments section... people get pissy real fast.
