Best NES Game Poll web site
Well, that page, , is mine, first of all.
I basically did something similar for a class and wanted to scale it up. and i got caught up in it a bit. Anyways, it's for fun mostly.
I am always willing to take input though, just message me.

well u have to have a link to register....
I like the voting, but isn't there a weak point?
When I don't know a game (or 2 or 3), how can I vote for or against it?
Yeah, that is a little on the tough side to make a call about... if I don't know a game, I generally try to look and see if I can tell who the company is. If not, I just guess. Still, it is an interesting project.
Jackal seems to be one of the top games as of this posting, and I just started playing that not too long ago. Fun game.
But I can't vote "from heart", when I don't know what I'm voting about.
That's the weakest point in this definitely interesting project.
yeah i was sitting there voting for like 20 minutes it was kinda fun except a lot of them i didnt no so i just guess voted lol
Same with me, but I didn't do it for 20 minutes. I stopped after about 5 minutes. He should build in a bar where he shoes you the progress.
What exactly do you mean when you say there should be a progress bar? There is page of results.
Perhaps you mean something different.
About knowing neither game, I was thinking about putting a third button in, one that would allow you to skip a current matchup. I thought about it and wasn't sure about it. Maybe I could add a 'skip' button and it would count to determine which games nobody knows about...or sleepers, or something like that.
You should definitely add a skip button.
By progress bar I meant, you should state how many games there are left, so that I knwo how much time it will still take.
It seems like it keeps going. I stayed on it for a LONG time one night, and alot of the same games were repeating after doing it for so long. It may be some sort of random number generation

Yes, it is random number generation. There is no control on how many times you get a game or even if a certain game comes up. You have an infinite amount of 'matchups' left.
This is really interesting to me... what language did you use to write this? Also, are you going to leave it up for a long time? It'd be interesting to see results after many years...
By the way, nice grilled ham and cheese sandwich!
The code is written in php, and I use mysql to store the data.
I am glad to see that there is some interest in it.
I don't see any reason to take it down in the near future, after all, I don't do anything for it besides the occasional tweak (like the skip button).
At a minimum it should be up for about another year and half (until my graduation). But by then I would have liked to move it somewhere under my own control anyways.
Thanks for the input so far, I really appreciate it. Also, if you think of anything else to add/change let me know. I am playing in my head with removing the randomness and making it more like going through all games once or something, but we'll see.
hmmm.. I don't know. That may take away from the overall charm of it. It seems to show what games are more appreciated than others, which is in itself interesting. I personally wouldn't do too much more tweaking, just promoting!
That skip button is definitely a good addition. I don't feel right voting between games unless I've played them both
That's the point. Without a skip button I voted for and against games I never played.
I was checking some of the results out, and think it's pretty cool to see a games like
Jackal and Fire 'n Ice towards the top of the list! On the OTHER hand, I would like to know who these gamers are that voted so much for Yo! Noid so I could tell them a thing or two!
I enjoy yonoid personally.
But that is basically why a lot of voters are needed before it provides 'realistic' outcomes. Right now it has about 4800+ matchup votes. I would say that roughly 10 times that would be necessary to eliminate outliers and personal preference of good or bad games.
But something about playing that game when I was little hasn't led me to avoid the noid...
That's it uglyjack! Here it comes!
"...a thing or two!"
There, I said it... Anyway, Do you think you could put the numbers back up that tell how many votes there have been? I thought that was pretty nifty. Also, on the results page, what if you put a back link somewhere at the top, too. I hate always scrolling down to hit the link, and like to have things saved in my cache.
Sure. The link has been put in.
I have been debating about whether to put the vote count back in on voting page. I took it out because it updates one page late. It would be especially apparent when you skip a game; it would appear as though it counted something for the skip when in reality it didn't.
So what I did, I put a vote total on the results page. If you think it would be better on voting page just let me know.
Thanks.

Ah... that works quite nicely! Awesome job! I think it's at a really good point right now. I WAS going to suggest putting how many votes each game recieved, but then realized that it would ruin the whole. i.e. people casting more votes for something that has maybe 2 shy of the one on top of it... Looks really good, dude!
How often do the results get updated? It's just that a couple of days ago I was voting and had the option of
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link vs
Double Dragon. I remember this because I love both these games but decided that I had to opt for the
Zelda game. I was just browsing the results and noticed that
Double Dragon has 100%. I don't know, maybe I hit the wrong button but I don't think so.
The results are generated on the spot, so your votes should always be represented when ever you view results, unless of course you have the results page in a seperate window/tab then you will have to refresh it.
I have tried many times lately to break it, but I check the numbers and so far everything is clean.
So either it was a different
Double Dragon game, or it could have been while I was doing some maitenence over the past few days.
But never-the-less I will try harder to break it...let me know if you catch anything else, thanks.
This is going to sound like I'm deliberately trying to catch you out but a few minutes ago I was voting and Yo! Noid came up. I remembered what was said earlier in this thread about Yo! Noid having 100% and voted for the other game (can't remember what it was now). I just checked and Yo! Noid still has 100%. Sorry for being a pain!
I just did a test where I checked the total amount of votes cast then did a few votes and checked the total votes again. It was the same amount so I don't think any of my votes have been counted.
So, none of your votes are being counted?
I will try it on a few different computers. Thanks for the info.
Could anybody else verify if it works for them?
I click the link
then I click the results page, then I click back, then I vote once or twice, then I click results again and I do see an increment of votes. I don't know why it wouldn't count your votes. I didn't put any restrictions on anything as far as I know.
I tried from my roomates comuter and works for him. I will certainly look into it.
No, no such thing in this case. I would much rather you tell me than let it slide.
5 minutes later...
My cousin successfully casted a few votes form different network in a different state. So, I am not sure what's going on/
I tried it out and it works for me.
I actually posted about 10 votes, and it didn't update in the process. I'm not sure if it updates on a time period, or what. It used to work for me on the fly.... maybe you could add the vote count to the main page again, too. Save from clicking back and forth to check.
It updates every time I vote.
All works prfectly from my computer.
That is odd that it is working for a few and not others.
The vote count is back up. But there iwll be a one page delay, so remember that please.
I doubt it would be a browser issue since everything else is displayed alright, and all the work is server side.
Maybe there is some kind of connection limitations...not sure right now
Ok, I changed one thing. It was always there though, so I am not sure if it would explain why it isn't work for Roth (for whom it was once working)
I'm afraid it's still not working for me. The post count in the top left hand corner stays the same no matter how many times I vote.
Did you try it earlier the voting earlier? and if so did you notice an increase in vote total?
The last major change was the skip button, but it wasn't really a major change just an addition. I will actually print up the code and run through it today to look for parts that look questionable.

Whatever you did worked for me because it works fine now!
Great to hear.
You may also notice a link to the "REVISED LAYOUT". I created that in response to a post I received at the nesworld forums.
I think it's pretty nice, a compact version of the three pages.
Any more comments let me know.
I can only wonder how long Yo!noid will remain at 100%.
Feel free to link to the page, spread the word. I don't have any outlets other than here and NESworld.com forums, so anybody you tell would be rad.
I think it will be cool to see how it turns out after a while.
Thanks to all for helping.
Sweet! It does work for me again! Good stuff!
About the
Yo Noid! thing, you didn't have to wait too long.
BurgerTime is now the top dog!
The Mario and
Zelda games aren't voted as good as expected.
Megaman 3 is on top now. I think NES-Luke might appreciate that.
I think it probably needs a few thousand more votes before it really starts taking shape. Then the games you'd expect should be nearer the top.
Of course.
I already voted so many times... the site should become more public. The ranking shouldn't base only on my and a few other forum posters' votes.
