If you can beat this without loosing a turtle, your a pro at NES. Same with Kid Icarus. The difficult titles.

I like the second one, becasue you can do 2 player mode. But this one blows that away for single player. I love how its an RPG/Action game. It's hard as hell to beat, but it is possible. THIS GAME ROCKS!

Green guys and pizzas
By Stalgaminite on 11/26/2003 3:35:01 PM
Turtles used to be my favourite TV show
when I was a kid. This game is really
cool too, it has many familiar characters from the cartoon and you can
play with every turtle. Graphics and
sounds are pretty good but this game is
really hard it has no password or save
system, but when you beat it, it feels
great. Bosses at the end of every level
arent usually too hard to beat, but its
almost in every level hard to get there.
The plot is traditional and boring kill
the bad guys and save the world but it
wont matter because this is very fun to
play. So if you like turtles get this
and have a slice of pizza.
MY RATING: 8.7/10

The First Installment of a Great NES Series...
By ChemicalTrain on 6/19/2003 3:00:30 PM
The TMNT series has always been one of my favorites for NES. As ALL guys who grew up in the late 80's and early 90's, I was a huge TMNT fan. This game is quite different from its two sequels, which I like better, but this is still a very good game. It can be very difficult and frustrating at times, but it's great to pull out and play if you're sick of the other two. The only bad thing about this game is that it doesn't have the cartoon theme song! What a bummer! If you grew up in the 80's, you're sure to find some fun with this game!

i used 2 be a serious tmnt fan. loved the NES,SNES and arcade TMNT games. but this is a disgrace to the whole series. The 1st level's downright odd and frustrating. maybe my cart doesnt work right, but sometimes the enemies morph into fire monsters and aliens who start shooting flames at ya! and if ya manage 2 get past it, the water level is next. it can piss you off like no other game...except maybe little nemo...or ikari warriors 1...
in conclusion (i sound like a freakin NES professor), skip TMNT 1, but definetely try 2 and 3. |

A Great First Try
By Eric on 1/31/2003 5:39:56 AM
I remember playing this game as a kid and absolutely hating it. I had the other two TMNT NES games, but I purposely passed over this one, as repeated rentals showed me only a very frustrating, poorly done game.
However, as the years went on, this game has grown on me. I finally own it, and its now one of my favorite NES games.
The graphic's weren't quite there yet, but the gameplay was pretty solid. I still don't like the monster things that are all over the game, I never saw those in the cartoon. But, I guess Konami (Ultra Games) wanted to take a few creative liberties with the enemies in this game.
My only other real complaint is that it is a little bit too difficult. I think that the game designers should have allowed the health status of all the Turtles be replenished to full after you complete each objective (IE, rescue April, save the dam, etc). But, I guess this can be forgiven.
This was the first step to the spectacualr arcade game port, where Konami perfected the TMNT game series. |

This Game Is Totally Kick Arse!! Much Better Than 2 And 3 Anyway :D The Graphics Look Kewl And The Gameplay Is Great Too :) I See Some People Have Problems Finishing The Game Well It Aint That Hard... Just Find The Right Way In The TechnoDrome ;)
But To Get Back To The Game Rating From 1 through 10 i should give this one a 9.5 cause it sucks there isnt something like a save or a password system but the overall game rocks!! |

HAVE YOU BEAT THIS GAME??

This game is the best game ever
By Tom Servo on 9/25/2002 7:23:31 AM
This game is really good and by that i mean it gets a 9.95 out of 10.1. The way that you use ropes is that you run into a post in front of a gap and the turtle should throw the rope. This would happen in the sidescrolling part of the game not the overhead view.

By Joe D on 5/9/2002 1:39:08 PM
This game isnt too bad, I used to get frustrated with it alot and give up after the level where you drive the turtle van, cause I could never get past this one sewer with out drowning. I started playing the game again recently and I have gotten further than I ever have. This is without game genie mind you. The furthest Ive gotten is the level after the town with the secret base. I am determined to beat this game. I will beat this game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
By lynx561 on 11/1/2001 10:03:32 PM
Ah, the Ninja Turtles. Every kid around the late 80s/early 90s had to love these rad dudes. They had everything comic books, cartoons, even their own cereal. So of course Videogame companies fought for the license so they could make a Nintendo game out of them. In the end Ultra won, and released the turtle's first of three games on the Nes. I used to hate this game when I was younger, and even when I rebought a couple of years ago I hated it. I finally sat down and really got into the game, and found out the game really isn't as bad as I had made it out to be.
Graphics: Not too bad for the release date of this game. All the characters are nicely animated, especially during the boss battles and the cut scenes. The game does look sort of rushed. When you jump your character's animations look blocky. Also, when there are a lot of enemies on the screen at one time there is slowdown and flickering, which only gets in the way of the already slightly above average graphics. In the overhead view, the graphics are good, nut you don't spend too much time in this mode.
Sound: The music in this game is actually great. The game doesn't use the Turtle's theme from the show, which sucks because that theme rocks. The tunes are each fitting for the level you are in at that time. The opening theme to the game is awesome and can be listened to over and over (unless you don't like it, in that case you probably won't want to listen to it over and over). As for the sound effects some of them are slightly off, such as the Leonardo's sword, which instead of making a slashing sound makes a sort of thud sound. But for the most part the sound effects are pretty good.
Gameplay: To me this game comes off as an adventure game more than a platformer. It is a pretty straight forward game that doesn't require much thinking on where to go next. But you can still make choices of which routes to take and if you want to go to that place or not. The game starts out that Shredders men have taken April and you must save her, but after you save April you return to your home and find they have captured Splinter. You start out in the overhead view and have to take the right path to find out where the boss is, but like I already mentioned it isn't too hard to figure out where to go next. There are lots of different enemies to fight depending on which batch you get. Some batches are easier than others, but the easier batches are harder to get. What happens, is when you enter a room you will see some bad guys, but these bad guys can change if leave then re-enter the room. It is a great idea. As for the turtles themselves, each of them has different abilities. Your two best are Donatello (strongest & best range) and Leonardo (fastest & widest range). Raphael and Michelangelo are pretty much your disposable guys. The control is alright, but the jumping is extremely awkward and takes a long time to get used to.
Replay: I used to think this game was extremely hard (everybody knows the infamous dam level), but it really isn't so bad. It gives you just enough lives to make it through and once you figure out the strategies for the levels you can breeze through them. I don't know about you, but I'm one of those guys that when I beat a game it's beat, and I usually want to start on another game right after. But this game was different. After I beat it, I found myself playing again and again, figuring out new routes and searching everyplace I could to feed my craving for this game. If your like me, then I suggest playing the game again after you beat and see how you react to the power of the Turtles.
Overall: Its not as bad as people make it out to be. To sum it up it's an underrated game that got a ton of hype and made a ton of money. Its kind of like in the commercials, "Ah, the power of TMNT"
