When I played this I didn't think it was much, but then when the plot was building up, wow! I would agree that this is the best NES game ever. I also read that the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based on this game.
Sound - 9/10
Good music for the backgrounds and towns, and good battle themes too.
Graphics - 8/10
Hey, for a 14 year old RPG, these graphics are great! No annoying flashes or anything when doing spells in battles.
Gameplay - 10/10
Nice! The battle system is superb in DOAE. I like the "All-Out" option in the battle menu, it's thrilling and fun to watch 2 armies charge at each other and let the smackdown begin! Balanced characters, lack of weapons and armor.
Storyline - 10/10
Killer plot!! I loved all the twists and turns the game went through, and it takes a hella long time to beat the game (Around 25-30 hours).
