A tricky start
By Lord of the Shades on 6/2/2006 6:08:16 AM
This one is to tight. To much pits and way to much enemies to drop you to your doom.
It started the hole castlevania plotline, but it's lot of bits to hard.
A casual gamer cannot do this game without screaming till breakdown.
While the first three levels are quite fair to go, the last three are that tough - speaking right of level five and six. It's ok that one level is a bit more challenging than the previous, but not in those steps. That reduces the replay value enormously.
I never finished this game. Have gone to Grim Reaper and died right away of lacking energy. Never saw level six without cheating.
I like the music, that's the best about the game. But there is no reason to play a game for the music and to go never further than level five if one can manage to pummel himself with such an unfairish difficulty.
Can a normal gamer stand the second difficulty? How is that without cheating - die hard, get buried and keep silent in eternal peace.

A fine game
By 46 on 1/23/2006 3:53:39 PM
Castlevania is the first of games that is arguably the most enjoyable series of games in video game history. A game with balanced challenge and some of the finest set of weapons to encounter enemies with. The holy water, though cheap when mastered, has got to be one of the best weapons in a video game. The cross, axe and even the heart consuming timeclock are also examples of genius weaponry. The challenge is well balanced, but not too hard, with some intense boss fights and deadly enemy/platform situations that really test your skills (those nasty medusa heads on the second quest). There\'s so much to say bout the game. A solid game for the ages.

4 stars

Oh god I'm dumb
By Popstar64:D on 7/13/2005 1:17:15 PM
First off, on my Dragon Warrior review i meant it's not an FF spoof! Anyways, this game is very hard and I had to use save states here and there. The graphics are very special and there are many enemies... like monkeys and skeletons. YOu use weaons which wr like a charm but the bat boss was the hardest for me, lol! The easiest is probably Medusa the second boss. 4/5

Is everything hard for me?
By cooltrophy21 on 11/2/2004 7:31:35 PM
This game is good, the graphics, the sound, and the action. I hate those instant death hazards even though. I'd give is a 8/10.

GRRR

I will not rate this game UNTIL I beat it, but I've never sworn so much in my lifetime...

Castlevania is a great game
By Kevin Syme on 6/23/2004 7:42:19 PM
I remember how I used to have Castlevania on the NES system at one time. This game was a great classic. I'd be willing to go to war with anyone who says that Castlevania sucks.
Bring it on suckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whiplash!!!
By Stalgaminite on 4/4/2004 5:35:46 AM
You are a vampire killer Simon Belmont.
Your mission is to go count drculas
castle and beat the bastard. You are
armed with whip but there is many other
weapons too in the castle. This game is
really good, a real classic i would say.
In the castle you meet every monster
that you can imagine. Like skeletons,
medusas, frankenstein, Reaper etc.
Musics are perfect and the graphics are
pretty good too. This is really I mean
REALLY! hard game to beat but oh the
satisfaction when you do. My rating 9/10

Another Legend
By gran on 3/8/2004 1:21:40 PM
One word to describe this game. PERFECT. I've beaten it almost as many times as The Legend of Zelda. To hell to anyone who says anything bad about this game. Its just a blast to play. Even today.

By Rohan Padiyar on 10/5/2003 9:36:07 PM
Recently my brother found me a top-loading Nintendo NES and I loved it. This is the perfect game for Halloween! It has good graphics. This is one of Konami's Masterpieces.

Konami is one of my favorite manufacturers.

Castlevania
By kicker of ass on 3/2/2003 10:40:00 PM
This is an ok game. Graphics and gameplay kind of suck (even by NES standards) but it is challenging and pretty fun. I give 2 1/2 out of 4 stars.

Classic
By GREAT PIE on 1/7/2003 9:46:12 PM
This game was one of my childhood favorites. I got nightmeres from it. I envisoned Frankenstein in my bedroom and the grim reaper appeared in my basement.
scary stuff that was. but not worse than splatter house 3, that game scared me for life.

A classic that follows the Rule of Thumb
By Ironman on 10/12/2002 10:10:01 AM
So what is the rule of thumb for the NES? The rule is this, and it goes for many games out there, if the level is easy, the boss is hard, if the level is hard, the boss is easy, the exception always being the first level or two. The story for Castlevania is simple. SImon Belmont is out to slay Dracula, just as his Grandfather Trevor did and Great Grandmother Sophia did. He must go through the Horrors of Draculas castle facing along the way the Gorgon, Vampire Bat, Mummy, and Frankenstein creature. Each level gets progressivly more difficult, but follows the ruel of thumb. For example level 4 is not all that hard, however the boss (Frankensteins monster) is very difficult to beat (mostly because of that damn imp). However level 3 is quite challenging but the boss (Twin Mummies) is not that hard to beat.

Overall the game is challenging, but not impossible. It will take time, but it can be beat.

One of NES's Crowning Achievements.
By ToddVania on 10/3/2002 10:41:21 AM
This game is so fun and graphically fantastic, that sometimes I think I'm playing my Playstation. Even though a little too hard in places (the Grim Reaper always kicks my butt at least once), it doesn't matter, because this game is sheer joy and fun. Bought it when it was brand new, and I still haven't tired of it. I just wish my NES would quit giving me trouble with the games. I never give 10's in my reviews, but this classic deserves 10 out of 10.

One of all time classics
By Norris on 6/18/2002 5:14:38 AM

By Sarah on 3/3/2002 5:58:57 PM
Another great NES title that withstood the passage of time! Very challenging, high learning curve, but still a highly enjoyable game.
