Unbearable
By Visjoner on 12/15/2004 7:31:13 AM
The game is ok if you want to have a good time for a while, but it becomes monotonous as all the stages are practically the same!! Besides, it isn't worth to play till the end, the final is too plain. Just play the first four stages and then forget the game because there's nothing new to see after them. A bad copy of Wonderboy, released in Sega. Much better Adventure Island 2.

Bought it by accident
By EM on 9/7/2004 7:02:55 PM
Went on eBay a few months ago to buy this game, once purchased, found out I was supposed to buy AI II instead of this one for my sister. However, did remember how fun it was on NES back when I was 6, but rarely got to play it for my older cousin had the only copy I had access to and wouldn't let his cousin 9 years younger (me) play! I am wounded for life... as for the copy of Sega's Wonder Boy, my brother-in-law is griping all the time about how this is a Wonder Boy rip off, but tell me this, how many people are buying Sega Master system games on eBay and not NES... so there!

Cool Game

Okay, well this game is a good game. The only problem is why is the main character nude?

An entertaining Wonder Boy clone. 3 stars.
By bart monger on 11/9/2003 1:23:48 AM
In 1988, Hudson Soft released Adventure Island, a clone of a Sega Master System game called Wonder Boy. The story is as follows: You are Master Higgins. The evil witch doctors have kidnapped your girlfriend Tina. You must search around a tropical paradise and defeat the Witch Doctors to rescue Tina. The gameplay is great, the music is okay, and the graphics are right on par for the time.

Fun and kinda cute!
By Rohan Padiyar on 10/5/2003 8:59:17 PM
Secretly, this is actually a Sega game because On the Sega Master System, it was titled "Wonder Boy". Nevertheless, be it Nintendo or Sega gamers, This game is fun to play amd a solid side scroller.

The Good 'Ol Days...
By ChemicalTrain on 6/18/2003 11:04:44 PM
This semi-classic is a fun and easy game to pick up and play. I have fond memories of playing it as a young child. I never owned an NES as a kid, but my sister and I always used to talk my dad into renting us one for the weekend. We would rent a few games, usually different ones each time, but we got this one a lot. I would watch my much older sister play, and when she got bored I'd finally get a chance. Great game, however the sequels are better.

Whats the name of the character?
By Shrink on 5/18/2003 6:15:38 PM
Is his name hudson or what? Im just asking so I know what to put at the end of his name when I die.

This game is impossible 51/100

Master Higgins need fast-fruits because suffer from diabetes! Just kidding :)
This game is hard and long, but it's just cool to play, save the chick from the ugly monsters with hammer or fire throwing!

My rate 8/10

An Island of Fun
By Eric on 1/31/2003 5:16:12 AM
I never did own this game, but I have very fond memories of playing it with my friend. This was a really simple, yet fun game. Anyone can pick it up and start playing without much trouble, but it also gets quite challenging eventually. A pretty good pick up overall.

Hungry?

Why can't he wait 5 seconds without food without dying?

A lost Classic
By Ironman on 10/12/2002 10:41:35 AM
THis is one of those titles that faded away with time. It's an unusual game for a few reasons. A) YOu were a caveman armed with a boomerang, dinosaurs, and a skateboard. YOu faced many evil dinos and your worst fear is an Eggplant? To be truthful this is a fairly childish but challenging game. The premis is the typical save the princess but it is a little fun. FOr most a rental (or an easy download).

Wonder Boy's day off...
By ToddVania on 10/3/2002 12:29:10 PM
What happened to Wonder Boy? Oh, I guess the looks of the character don't matter, especially when you're trying to master this one. Pretty challenging when it was new, and now that I'm more skilled at games in general, it's a little more relaxed. I loved this as Wonder Boy when it was in the arcades, and it really hasn't changed much. The skateboard is cool, though a little out of control, and I think Hudson could benefit from an energy bar instead of dying when a bug bites his little toe. Great graphics, basically an OK game cart. 7 out of 10.

Master Higgins Attacks!
By Ebo on 10/2/2002 4:57:17 AM
Master Higgins's first adventure, Adventure Island, is worth owning. It's not the greatest game in the world, but it is definitely an enjoyable sidescrolling, Mario-style quest. 4 stages comprise each level, and the last stage always ends with a pathetically easy and repetitive boss fight. Higgins tends to slide off of ledges quite easily (think the opposite of Simon Belmont in Castlevania), but the control when riding the skateboard is quite good. I particularly enjoy the music in this game, especially when you are invincible. The graphics aren't revolutionary, but you can certainly tell what is going on.
My biggest problem with this game is the difficulty level. Three lives is simply not enough, and although you get continues from the start of each level, by the end of the day you may throw up your hands and scream "My God, what have I done?!?" As a video game veteran, I'm big enough to admit that while I have come extremely close, I have never beaten this game. I'll deal, though.
On a 1-10 scale, with 5 as average:
Graphics:6
Sound:8
Play control:7
Challenge:9
Pick it up if you can!

Unofficial Wonderboy port
By Sarah on 4/6/2002 4:07:43 PM
I recently learned that Adventure Island is an unofficial port of Wonderboy made by the original co-developers of Wonderboy. However, I still prefer the Sega Master System version to the NES port.

Still, the non-evolution of Adventure Island (sequels were NOT made by the same people) shows how smart Sega was in changing the game in subsequent Wonderboy releases.

Classic Nintendo
By Adam on 3/1/2002 9:22:16 PM
This game represents everything that I loved about the original Nintendo system. The gameplay is good and the controls are simple, but to succed in beating the game you have to play A LOT. Don't misunderstand me, the game is fun and the first two or three levels are easy, even the secrets are easy to find, but when playing on level 9 or so things are much harder. Overall I'd say that the only reason to dog this game would be frustration at the cartoon animation for kicking your ass! It's great fun!!! 4.5/5

Adventure Island Review
By Brandon D on 2/8/2002 11:14:16 AM
Adventure Island is an okay game. It becomes very boring and repetitive after World 3. The levels are all exactly the same (except more enemies are added at the later levels and less fruit). The later boards are extremely frustrating and seem impossible to beat. The ending sucks bigtime! The ending just thanks you for saving the "lovely tina." The end. However, the game is worth buying just to ride the skateboard!

Overall, it's not all that much of a bad game, just very challenging!

it's ok
