SMB3 speed run

In Super Mario Bros.

Well, the guy obvsiously cheated in a number of places, but I think for the most part it's still very impressive.

WARNING: FILE IS VERY LARGE, NOT SAFE FOR DIAL-UP

Wow! I've just watched the movie and as well
Do you really think that guy cheated in some stages? Maybe played the same stage several times until getting the purpose of finishing each level so quickly, and finally made that video. But it's impressive anyway!! He or she must have played too much to get such control.
Such an easy way to get extra lives and not to lose Mario Tanoki or Mario Fire...
Everyone must have this file!!!

Well, if you look where he used the warp whistle that proves he cheated, you have to get to world 2 before using the whistles to skip right to 8. note that he completely skipped the second part. I think it was just done on an emulator using save states honestly... still impressive, but it would have been more so had he done it legitimately.

You use the whistle in W-1 and you warp to W-2 thru W-4... You use the whistle in W-2 and you warp to W-5 thru W-7...

If you look at what he did, he used the whistle in W-1, then in the warpzone, he used the second whistle... to go to W-8. I do that all the time when I'm playing SMB3....

Wish I could watch this, my I'm running 28.8k dial-up! And to think I actually attempted downloading! Well, I got enough downloaded to see the first two levels, and they were pretty fast!

Nes Luke has it right

I haven't seen it, obviously, but I thought you could use both the warp whistles on the first level to get to World 8. In fact, you can! So if the guy got the whistle in 1-3 and the whistle in the World 1 mini-castle, then all he would have to do is blow the first whistle. That would take him to the warp zones 2-4. From there, if you blow the second whistle, then you will be taken to the Warp Zone 8. I just tried it. Still wish I could see it, however...

Its quite obvious in some spots. I saw for example, he got hit, flashed small, then immediatly got big again. I find this video pretty stupid in the sense that I don't want to watch someone else play a video game and that he cheated his way through it.

Really... I'll have to try that right now.

How long did it take for the person to get through the game? Even though they cheated, I'm a bit curious.

the video is eleven minutes long, most of that time is spent on world 8 though... I always hated world 8

I really like the boats, airships, and tanks levels. The drums went really well with those stages. The airships were probably the most fun. Really fast stuff.

Hmmm, I guess if you use the two whistles right from world 1 is does take you right to 8, sorry about that mistake.

Finding out about that helped me beat that game sooner than I would have. Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever tried to go straight through that whole game! I might have to try that...

Someone has told me that that video is a fake. The author played around 45000 games of Mario 3 to get it and personally recognized that cheated.

Really an exciting issue!

WARNING: FILE IS VERY LARGE, NOT SAFE FOR DIAL-UP Hi! I'm a new forum, and I saw SMB3 speed run. I wondered if it was you that did it, please write the answere back to me!

No, guest, no one at this board did that. It's a file that NES-Luke found. My dial-up won't allow me to get it, however.

Roth, you should be able to get it if you can leave your computer on and connected to the internet overnight. I used to do that with large files all the time. I also recommend a download manager so that you can resume the file if you get disconnected.

I've downloaded the ISO images for FreeBSD 5.0 (over 500MB) on dial-up.

Yeah, but it just seems like a pain in the arse, ya know what I mean? When school starts back up, I can download it from there. Very fast connection!

I finally saw the vid. WOW!!! Yeah, I noticed the couple of times he got hit and it seemed like nothing happened. You know what though? The way that person was jumping on all the Bob-Ombs and cannonballs to get all those 1-ups was just plain skill!!! That person can play the h*ll out of that game!!! Also, I didn't even realize you could defeat Bowser by jumping on his head!!! I always just did the floor thing. Stellar performance!

you CAN warp to world 8 from world 1 using the first 2 whistles. get the first whistle on 1-3 by holding down on the big white block that a turtle is walking back and forth on towards the end of the level. kill the turtle then hold down on the white block untill you fall through, then run to the end and youll be in toads house and you get the whistle from him. then go to the castle and fly up where you get the POWer up by the dry bones turtle and go into the secret room and open the chest. then use the first whistle and it takes you to the warp tunnels to worlds 2 3 4. now use the second whistle and youll be at world 8.

Not by jumping on his head, but shooting fireballs while Mario is on his head.

thanks, now perhaps if you had read the thread you'd know that at least two people have already said that.

its fake. the author of it spent like over a year pieceing frame by frame save states together or something like that. dont exactly remember the story as it has been a long time

Yeah, it's from one of those "We use tools" sites. It make look cool at first, but if you can't without assistance, then what the h - e - double hockey sticks would you do it for? Seems like such a waste. I'm sure he's actually really good at the game, but obviously not that good.

yeah anyone with decent enough skill at the game can beat it in like 20 min easy just try not to die =)

20 minutes seems possible. I definitely did it under 30 mintes once.

takes some practice but its possible i could do in like 20-25 no prob what this guy did (even though hes cheating) is unreal i couldnt just go flying through levels and not fall into a hole or something

That's true but... thou shalt not be cheating.
It would be much more impressive to me if it was a run.

It's been a loooong time since I saw this video but I really enjoyed it. I think disregarding it as a useless fake is missing the point. It would be like going to see the latest action film and complaining that the hero didn't really single handedly overthrow a terrorist regime whilst avoiding a thousand bullets and bedding a hot Russian spy.

That mario video was never supposed to be believed ( if I remember correctly the guy who made it expalined how he did it on his site). It was just supposed to be fun. It's how the Terminator would have fared if he had played Mario 3.

Yeah, it's definately entertaining! I was flipping out when I first saw it. I'm kind of over it now, and am probably going to look for more at some point. I just got done viewing Contra: Shattered Soldier.... without dying! Now that's a feat! I believe I was able to do the first four or five levels death free, but not the entire game! It was truly a sight. The person makes it look so easy! Makes you think, "Man, I can do that!"

Probably can't, though...

Speed run videos often make use of great strategies for passing parts of games... since I've watched them I've noticed that I play most games a lot faster. Amazingly it works most of the time, it's as if the levels are designed to be run through completely.

Yeah, that's how I play most games... at a very fast pace. I find it to be more simple that way, and more entertaining to myself. I hate playing a game and being like, "Ok, I'll stand here until this guy comes to me..." or whatever. More fast is more fun!!!

That depends on the game.
Sometimes it IS better to wait. Perhaps I'm only a coward...
