The Simpsons, which state do they live in

In Off-topic

I am sure most of you simpsons fan out there know that, the writers are keeping it a mystery.

But in many episodes, they give us clue to which state they don't live in.

Perhaps, we could do some detective work to find out by eliminating the states where they don't live.

I will start first:
In one episode, they were expecting a vaccation to Hawai or Alaska. So it is clear that they don't live at these two places.

Do you guys, have anything to share.

I'm not 100% positive, but I always imagined that they were from Illinois. I think there have been some references towards Illinois, but I can't recall them right now.

Should shed some light on the subject.

I did for a while too. Mainly because of the whole nuclear POWerplant thing and references to a nearby town called Shelbyville.
But apparently not so.

Yep. I remember seeing an episode where they look at the US map, and see that they are only welcomed in 2 states or something.

I've wondered about this before. There are hints, but they always seem to Contradict each other. Like in the episode where Apu is facing deportation. Homer is helping him to study for his citizenship test and he says that they may ask him to locate the town on a map. He points to one place, but Bart & Lisa point to two other different places. Grr!

As already stated above, it is unclear where Springfield is.
The descriptions in various episodes are Contradicting.

The makers wanted to make the viewers feel like the Simpsons could be their neighbours.
In a nutshell, "Springfield is anywhere and everywhere is Springfield". (or something of that sort...)

@Matt Groening & Fox: Please release all seasons AND QUICKLY!!! I don't want to wait 10 years from now.

I think one time they said it was in Nevada or something.

they do not live in any state. i am pretty sure. its not Massachusetts or Illinois

On the Behind the Laughter episode, the Simpsons were reffered to as a northern Kentucky family.

However, in later airings of the same episode Kentucky is replaced with Missouri. And in more recent reruns there's even more states mentioned.

The only way to really find out the answer to this is to pay attention when the family is traveling. There's always signs that say things like "Las Vegas: 2000 miles". One could keep a record of the distances the family travels and pinpoint the Simpsons' home state based on these figures.

I don't think that would work. The authors don't have a special place in mind, that's why they Contradict themselves in various episodes with place names, descriptions and distances.

When it comes to where The Simpsons lives. I've found it out. Matt Groening has taken their adress (Evergreen Terrace) from his home town, Portland in Oregon. Then he gave the town the name Springfield in Illinois. Some other cool facts is: You know Chief Wiggum, right? Well he got the name from his mothers maiden name: Marge Wiggum.

All of the characters in the Simpsons family is named after his own family members. His father: Homer Groening.
His mother: Marge Groening.
His sisters: Lisa and Maggie Groening.
Himself: Was originally to be named Matt, but he didn't want it to be too closely related, so he named him "Bart". The name Bart is a play on an adjective describing him, 'brat'.

Mr. Burns from "The Simpsons" is named after a town not far away from Portland.
