I know Seanbaby already did this, but...

In Off-topic

What do you think was the one movie that represented everything eighties? Seanbaby did something like this already on his website, but since we have an international community here, I think this will make for an interesting thread. Seanbaby only dealt with American movies.

Describe the plot, too, in case someone hasn't seen it.

It about a bunch of high school students and dealing with situations that kids often go through (Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll). How more eighties can you get when the kids are sniffing the freshly xeroxed papers to get a buzz? It's great, one of my favorites! Sean Penn did an awsome job as a stoner. Plus you get all the young and old stars of the eighties.

Pheobe Cates
Judge Reinhold
Jennifer Jason Leigh (First boobs I saw on TV)
Sean Penn (Spicoli rules!)
Anthony Edwards (He acually had hair back then)
Forest Whitaker
Nicolas Cage (He might have been credited as Nicolas Copalla back then)
Ray Walston (Who can forget MR HAND?)

The Goonies. I'm not sure why, maybe it's because I first saw it back then, but for me that film has the 80's written all over it. Also anyone who was a kid in the 80's will have a smile on their face when you mention the Goonies. Do the truffle shuffle!

For me it's probably any of the eighties Friday the 13th flicks. I'm sure everyone here knows what those are, so I won't go into detail.

Id probably say the breakfast club. They had every type of stereotypical teen from the 80's there.

I personally think that THE eightiest movie of all time was Krull.

The plot is as follows:
There's a magical kingdom in a place far, far away. A prince and a princess are about to be married. Unbeknownst to them, an evil space fortress has landed, and its ruler, Krull, sends out legions of evil, tall, faceless monster troopers armed with laser spears. (When you kill them, a bug crawls out of their face. Bloodily.) So, naturally, the bad guys attack the castle and abduct the bride-to-be. So, the prince sets out on a magical quest to slay Krull and win his baby back, using a magical, legendary tri-boomerang/blade thing. On his journey he will meet Cyclopses, giant spiders, flying/flaming-hoofed horses, oracles, shapeshifters (who are really wierd and awesome), and anything else they could throw in.

And when people fight with swords in the initial castle attack, their swords shoot red lightning, for some reason.

The plot was ridiculous, the special effects were almost as bad, the acting was rather mediocre, but it was just so cool, you couldn't help but like it. That's why I think it's the eightiest movie ever.

EDIT: Oh, and Krull is defeated by true love, which somehow involves flamethrowers.

EDIT EDIT: And it was animated, either. It was a real people. I don't know if you can believe that or not, but it's true.

I'm putting in another vote for The Goonies. Cyndi Lauper's hit single on the soundtrack, The Goonies R Good Enough? The video for it had classic wrestlers such as Capt Lou Albano and Rowdy Roddy Piper, for cryin out loud. It doesn't get much more 80's than that.

ah, i'm torn. the Goonies was definitely eighties, but krull... (i've seen part of it. didn't know that was what it was, but the thing with the bugs crawling out of the guys' faces was unmistakable)

the thing about krull is that it's more eighties than clash of the titans and the flash gordon movie combined. i mean, read the plot! Laser bug aliens in a space fortress attack the Dungeons and Dragons game. the thing about krull is, it would never, work in any other era except the eighties. for me, the ridiculousy, cheesy, and impossibly lame awesomeness of it put it just one notch above the Goonies.

I've already put in my vote, but I think Tron should at be mentioned as a potential candidate.

All the movies mentioned so far have been excellent choices.

Thinking of films from the 1980's, I always remembers the "adventure fantasy" flics that would wow my childhood imagination. I can't really narrow it down to one.

The Neverending Story
Flight of the Navigator
The Dark Crystal
Labyrinth
The Princess Bride
Dragonslayer
Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
The Beastmaster
Time Bandits
Gremlins
KRULL!

But if I had to pick just one movie to represent the 1980's, it would have to be " U.S. military doesn't exist in this movie).

Or maybe "". Corey Feldman is in it. There's also that "other" Corey guy too. They run around southern California killing off vampires with their water guns filled with holy water (why wasn't there a game of that).

"Flashdance" gets an honorable mention with accurate portrayal of 80's fashion, along with its matching soundtrack.

...

By the way, I haven't even looked at seanbaby's list (I didn't want to be "influenced" before coming up with my own choices).

Good for you! He has some pretty good choices, though.

Honorable mentions, eh? Flashdance definitely makes the cut. If we're doing honorable mentions, I think Ice Pirates should be nominated as well. Also, I nominate Tron as one, and withdraw the eightiest movie nomination, because I don't think it'll win as THE eightiest movie, I think it should at least win thing.

So, here's the totals so far:

Eightiest Movie:

2
1
2
1
(Since we can only do one of them, lets' do the first one. Any objections?)
1
1

Honorable Mentions:

1
1

Awright, Krull and Goonies are tied for The Eightiest Movie, and Tron and Flashdance are tied for the Honorable Mention. Anyone is free to make more nominations, but you can only vote once for The Eightiest Movie, and once for the Honorable Mention.

Hmmm....i'd have to say the breakfast club too. Honourable mention to the goonies. I would say scarface captures some of the 80's - greed, cocaine etc. but it was a remake of an 1932 film, which i've never seen though, so i'm not sure if that counts, but i'm sure they will be rather different as there was a gap of 51 years between the original and remake!

best represented the eighties? i would choose The Goonies. my favorite eighties movie? Back to the Future.

The Toxic Avenger (1984) In my opinion represented the eighties
1.Buff, Muscle crazed men
2.assembly line women
3.nerds that get revenge
and
4 gore. lots of sensless violence.

The 1932 "Scarface" is film about the notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone. It has nothing to do with Tony Montana and the 1983 movie.

Ah well, some jackass I know said it was a remake, but on closer inspection of the DVD case he said it says "inspired" i.e they just stole the name. He has been given a slap and is now embarassed thoroughly. And rightly so.
