DS off to a good start!

In Handhelds

I believe Nintendo may always have the crown for greatest handhelds! They always market wisely, it seems. I think this speaks for itself!

Well, I think the DS is going to kill the PSP, I've heard A LOT of bad things about the PSP. Hardware defects are terrible with it.

I don't know about any hardware problems, but Sony seems to never have enough product. Here where I live, after the first wave of PS2's sold out, we had to wait between 3-6 months for the next shipment. That's just bad business. Then when I get mine, it breaks a year-and-a-half later!

I didn't even get a year and a half out of mine, it was just until the warranty was up, and just after I bought about $800 worth of games for the thing.

yea i have as well psp is gonna suck sure nintendo has slacked on the consoles but there handhelds should never be beat

I didn't hear anything bad about the PSP yet, but I also don't know what should be good about it.
The screen is big, but not safe from scratches.
Actually it is something like a portable PS2. Same games, same graphics, nothing new.
The DS brings new ideas, new game concepts.
That's why I'll buy a DS and no PSP.

And I hope the pure POWer of the name "Sony" won't sell too many units.
Because there are people out there who buy it because of the name "Sony", sometimes without knowing what they are exactly buying!

the PSP as I recall is just the same as a PS2, but with less memory.

as for people buying it because of the 'Sony' name, that is the exact opposite for me, I've had nothing but problems with any Sony product I've used, and will never buy another Sony product unless they straighten up and realize once again that products are made for consumers, not for their monetary gain.

and their QC (Quality Control) must be terrible. The analog stick popped off of my PS2 controller after being thrown by my girlfriend's brother. so I open it up (brand new a few years ago, I was there when it was purchased for me from the store, and I personally unpacked it from the box) and what do I find in this controller?

A BUBBLE GUM WRAPPER!

of course I called Sony about it, and they just denied it, and said that their QC was fantastic.

There should be more people like you.
And me. I also don't buy Sony products, because I can get better quality at a lower price somehwere else.

Nothing's popping off Nintendo products! I don't recall how many times I threw my N64 controller (frustration) and it still works fine.
My cat also once dropped the N64 from the shelf (140cm high) while I was playing Ocarina of Time and the game didn't even stop. I could play on as if nothing had happened. That I call quality.
You can even step on a gameboy and nothing happens.

I can't agree that the N64 controller was quality, that analog stick wears out MUCH too quickly.

as for the console not stopped when falling, that's the beauty of carts, if that were to happen with... say a PS2, #1 the PS2 would explode because of all the cheap plastic, #2 the game would freeze up for sure, and #3, the disc would likely be garbage.

CARTS FOR LIFE!

Yes, the good old carts.
If they just weren't so expensive.

Hmm... my two N64 controllers didn't wear out at all. And I used them quite exhaustingly. Maybe I was extraordinarily lucky with them.

I would GLADLY pay the extra $1 it costs to produce a cart over a disc if for no other reason than knowing that I can dig it out of the closet in 20 years and enjoy it again.

I don't think this is a 1$ question, I fear.

A CD-Rom doesn't cost more than 5-10 cents (at most) in mass production. DVD's aren't much more expensive.
For cartridges you need chips of a very big size.

Try to imagine a cartridge for a new system with, let's say 5GB?
This would probably cost you an amount of over 500$, and that's a low assumprion.
Look at the prices for Neo Geo carts.

Games are much too complex today, so they won't fit on a cartridge any more. Unfortunately.
As long as nobody invents a new very very cheap storage technology, there won't be carts anymore in the gaming world...

yeah, that unfortunately is the case... carts are outdated, with the huge graphic files and such being used today you just can't fit all of that data on a cart... GTA: San Andreas is up to using a double layer DVD (9+GB) and as I recall, they said it was getting pretty close to full...

And imagine what happens when HDTV is coming up and the games should be in hi-res...
I think games of 50 or even 100GB are not so far away.

i know some things bad about the psp and ill run them bye you

battery life is only 4-6 hours gaming 4-5 movies

its gonna cost anywhere from 200$-300$

and considering that its there first attempt at handheld it probably wont be so good

actually, right now most places are selling PSPs for $500+ and even battery life aside, it has a whole slew of problems...

twist it just a little and the drive pops open the UMD goes flying out.

the Square button on the case doesn't line up with the contact on the PCB, and therefore the button press will often not register or the button will stick.

the analog stick doesnt work, or just plain pops right off the console...

there have been A LOT of reports of dead pixels on the screen...

wow that really sucks and i mean when it comes out its gnna be 200-300 thats ridicoulous for handheld

yes, that price is far too high for a handheld of such poor quality. the DS sells for $199 CDN here, and personally that's more than I'd like to pay for it, although it's a quality product, I just don't feel it's worth that much. primarily because I don't find the touch screen to be very useful as I've stated several times before

CDN? is that canada its 150$ here and i think its worth it. The touch screen is useful if u want it to be especially for like minigames theres tons of minigames on super mario 64 ds that uses the touch screen amazingly

yes, CDN is Canadian, and I'll agree that the touch screen has it's uses for mini-games and such things, but for action sequences it's just not functional in my opinion. That's not based on lack of experience with it either, I've used it a fair bit and it just doesn't like me

dude have u seen the stylus thats what its for! i dont use the "nubbin"

Why yes, I have seen the stylus, and oddly enough you can't properly hold the thing in your hand and use the stylus at the same time...

Is that "nubbin" so bad?

no actually its not if u get used to it which is hard

So when you get used to it it's good?
Oh, I want to try it for myself, but DS won't come out in Germany until March or so...

i don't have any problem holding the ds and the stylus at the same time, it works pretty well for me

the only disappointment i have is that i don't have anyone to play Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt against

That's a problem.
I always have the same. There's nobody you can play against.

But perhaps in some time you can play against friends online.
