Game Boy variants

In Handhelds

Without looking it up, how many variations of the Game Boy can you think of?

I can think of 5 by name, I have a 6th in my head, but I'm not sure, I'll not name them so I don't spoil it for other posters.

im thinkin of 5 also but ill tell later

Five is also the number that I came up with before looking it up. I was a bit surprised to find out how many there actually were. Anybody else have a guess?

Do you count all the colors? The we could have a hundred versions or so.
If not, I can think of 6 different versions. Should be all.

Wait a sec!
Do the Gameboy Players (Super Gameboy, Super Gameboy 2 and Gameboy Player) for SNES and Gamecube count?

The we'd have 9 versions.

yeah, I didn't consider them... I don't think they should count though, they're more adaptors than consoles.

That's true. They're definitely no consoles.
But they're called "Gameboy"...
Yeah, shouldn't be counted.
So we were at 6, right?

you thought 5 but were surprised... guess that means there were more than 5...

This is true...

6, or not
When do we solve it?

Yeah I can think of 6 official Nintendo deVices that play Gameboy games, excluding console adapters. So how many are there?

Yes, 6 ones. There are some weird pirate machines in Korea and HK, but those don't count.

Sorry about this guys, but I'm having trouble finding the link to what I discovered. What I found was a page denoting 10 versions of the Game Boy, but one of them was only released in Japan. I'll continue to try to find it again

[UPDATE: I'm not finding the link at all, but I'm going to say six. What I found MAY have included the Super Game Boy and the like. I'm thinking it was a programming page, so the programmers could cover every aspect of it. We could say:

Game Boy
Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Light
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy Advance SP

If anyone knows of any others left off of this list, please post them.

The Game Boy is said to be the best-selling video game system in history, though that probably includes all the variations put together.]

These are the 6.
Game Boy Light only came out in Japan.

I can't imagine there are 10 versions unless you count the gameboy player adaptors, and then we would have 9)

hmmm lets see
orginal big gameboy
gameboy pocket
gameboy color
game advance
gameboy sp
video boy thing although dont no if it counts
nintendo ds

Not sure what the 'video boy thing' is unless you mean the Virtual Boy...
and if that's the case, no it doesn't count. Nor does the DS, this is for things actually named GAME BOY.

you dont think the ds counts lol its really a gameboy they just didnt incorporate it to it and yes ure right virtual boy is what i meant thnxz

In NO way is the DS a Game Boy. Just because it was released by Nintendo, doesn't automatically make it a Game Boy. The graphics are intensely amazing, and the play control is totally different from the Game Boy. It's an entirely new system, with new hardware and console design. Once again, if a hand-held is released by Nintendo, it's not automatically a Game Boy.

let me ask you this...
do you think gameboy could be over...
i mean do you think they will have no more gameboys?

No, I don't think the Gameboy is over, the GBA hasn't reached NEAR it's potential yet... I've seen videos from these people called the Pocketeers, they built a game that was almost comparable to early playstation graphics on the GBA, the only part that wasn't as good would have to be that the characters were sprites, but that's perfectly tolerable. (as a side note, the Pocketeers have gone commercial since then, and have had a few games released, they very much deserve the credit as well.)

Also, when the DS was annouced Nintendo specifically stated that it was not the successor to the GameBoy. so I'm VERY doubtful that the GB is at the end of it's life.

and now for the links:

Pocketeers main page.

wow really... that sounds cool the next gameboy ill probably be buying considered i never owned a advance/sp

The next version of the Gameboy was already announced.
Nintendo says they will now support 3 console-lines at a time, i.e.
Gamecube (and what comes after)
Nintendo DS
Gameboy Advance SP (and what comes after)

I'm really curious how the next Gameboy will be.

It's nice in theory, but I have my doubts about how well Nintendo will be able to support 2 separate handhelds, especially with tough compitition from the PSP. Depending on which is more successful, I think they will end up droping one.

if people would develop some common sense and do some research before buying things the PSP would already be dead... although competition is a good thing, it breeds innovation.

Yeah, although the Gameboy has been excellent on quality in the past few years despite having barely any competition.

that's always been Nintendo's strong point... I can't ever recall having a nintendo product stop working, and I've seen some pretty beat up consoles. As I stated in another thread, Nintendo is one of the few companies that still puts the customer first, they respect us because it's us that pay them. whereas Sony seems to have lost sight of this fact, and think that we should bow to them for producing their products.

you are 100% correct with youre statements. How u go Daynum youre right too even with mostly no handheld competition (unless u call n-gage competition) they still put out great quality.

I predicy psp to be the next n-gage

I predicy psp to be the next n-gage

I'd like that to happen, but I'm not as sure of this like you.

I mean, nobody knows Nokia as a producer of video games, so N-Gage couldn't be successful.
But Sony... There are people who just buy it because of the name.
They don't even think about it. Such people start flames against Nintendo and the DS without even knowing of what they are talking.

I think the PSP will sell just fine because of the name alone. There is no need of innovation. I think there will be more ports of old games on the PSP than on the Gameboy.

Yes I agree. I can't see the PSP being a big flop, simply because of the Playstation brand backing it up. The announcement last week that there will be a new Grand Theft Auto on the PSP has pretty much guaranteed it will be a success amongst the masses.

Unfortunately, yes, the PSP will be a wild success... not that's deserving of such success. it could have been a great console, if it were developed by someone that cares and puts some effort into things... I guess we'll have to wait and see if the US/european release is an improved console...

I personally don't think they will change the Japanese version for us Westerners. Right now they're probably already producing the US and European units somewhere in China.

'
yes i know i was just kidding about the prediction there will be many people who buy it because ""sony is awesome""

Game&Watch, Gameboy, SuperGameboy, GameboyPocket, Gameboy Light, GameboyColor, GBA, GBASP, DS. Woot! That's all I can think of.

If you say Super Gameboy you also have to mention the Gameboy Player for the Cube.
Game & Watch and Nintendo DS are not Gameboys. At least I can't find the word "Gameboy" in it. Please read through the whole thread.

Another reason why I'm called a "nOOb" somtimes.

I don't like the word n00b...
Here you are a Koopa Troopa.

Ha Ha! You can only kill me by shooting a fireball at me or kicking me at someother koopa!

I through a hammer at you. So do Luke and Roth.
... we won't kill you. We are in the same "company". As long we have no "Mario" rank, you'll be safe.

* Mario comes* Mario: Imma going to win! * NES-dude throws hammer at mario* * Mario shrinks * Mario: Oh no! *NES-dude touches Mario* * Mario dies*NES-dude: That's sad!
