How do you compete?

In Handhelds

The Sony has unleashed one of if not the best handheld gaming product currently. Nintendo used to own this division, but even they are having trouble with fighting it off with it's DS. Any thoughts what Nintendo would have to do with it's next handheld?

uhhh, the DS has been outselling the PSP something like 5 to 1... Nintendo still owns the handheld market.

Also, the GBA has sold just as much as the PS2 has, over 28 million units. Nintendo has nobody to fight off. Sony has to fight up...

As long as there are 8-12 year old boys with parents who don't want to spend $300 on a portable gaming system that will most likely be dropped and broken, Nintendo will have market dominance.

The PSP and the DS are in two different markets that happen to overlap a bit. Sure a Ferrari and a Mercedes are both cars, but I doubt Ferarri get's intimidated when Mercedes releases a new Benz.

I agree with Luke, Nintendo has the Gameboy Advance, which has by far the most selection and the best games, Sony has yet to release a good RPG for the PSP which I think would be crucial for sales to rise.

The PSP is going to end up with all the crap games, as the PS2 did. This is clearly a case of Sony trying to cash in on the playstation brand (as most people can't get enough of it) Also, I feel the only reason they included the MP3 player and all that crap is probably because they know the standard of games is going to be lame and have to make it up by adding a few "feautures" Games consoles should stay purely games consoles. For hecks sake if I wanted to listen to MP3s on the go i'd by an iPOD.

Never really been a fan of the PS/PS2/PSP. But I think more bang for your bucks in a handheld is an great idea as long as it is implemented as a secondadry feature of the gaming portable. But the PSP to me looks like it was made of the older crowd and not the "kids". I looked into getting one for my children but absolutely no games for people that young.

Did you happen to play so called "crap game" on the PS2, or are you just "wishfully thinking"?

Isn't it a company's job to "cash in" on their products? Much like Nintendo does with Mario and all of their other overused characters (as most people can't get enough of it).

Being able to play mp3s isn't going to do anything to improve games (that should be obvious). It is an included "feature" because it adds another element of portability to a system that takes advantage of the abilities of it's hardware.

Ridiculous. A new iPod costs around $250-300 (US). There's nothing wrong with a console that can do more than just playing games (just because Nintendo chooses to take the "only plays games" route, doesn't make that the "rule of thumbs").

With the PSP, Sony is appealing to both the gaming community and the portable media player crowd. In my opinion, it's a smart move on their part.

As for the "quality" of PSP games so far, it's still too early to determine the potential of it's "gaming abilities". However, I'm sure the PSP can do just about anything that the PS2, PS1, GBA, N64, DreamCast, Genesis, Super Nintendo, and NES could do also.
