NES pixel art avatar

In General Gaming

I've recently become interested in pixel art, and my first pixel art project, about a month ago, was an old NES controller.

This was done in Photoshop, pixel-by-pixel, and took around an hour and a half, mostly because I kept adjusting elements to get the dimensions/placement right.

Well, I recently decided to do a dogbone style controller to make an avatar. Again, I built this entirely in Photoshop, pixel-by-pixel. Finally, although I tried to create an embossed look by hand, I couldn't get it smooth enough, so used Photoshop's emboss layer style. I ended up with a little more photo-real look, but it's still distinctly pixel-art.

This one ended up taking a little over an hour and is composed of 6 layers, because I had to break the components down into separate layers to adjust the embossing on each individual element. I'm pleased with how it turned out, and combined both controllers into one image for my current avatar.

That's some good drawing in a program. I can't seem to understand the more advanced programs, so it seems I'm stuck with using the dumb ol' paint program that comes with windows. Maybe some day my feeble mind will understand them, but until then, keep up the cool work for us all to see!

I can relate! I can never understand all the fancy graphic design programs so I always end up drawing some squiggly peice of shit on Mspaint!

Well, that's two of us. If anyone knows of any good on-line tutorials for programs such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, could you leave the link here?

I just got a copy and started messing around. I've been using Photoshop for about 5 years now. Most of my learning was just trial and error.

If you'd like a copy of Photoshop, you can PM me.

There's numerous PhotoShop tutorials online if you search google for 'photoshop tutorial'. There's a lot to it, but there's a few that teach the basics you'll need first, such as selecting, layers, tools, etc. I use Photoshop for all my graphics these days, and I'm starting to get pretty OK with it-- I'll never be a pro graphics designer, but I can get by...

OR, there's the Gimp, I'm no graphic expert, but it's pretty good.

GIMPs okay if you want to go the open source/FREE route, but I can't get into it. I would also say it has maybe 75% of Photoshop's functionality. Not bad for a free program, but I'll stick with Photoshop.

I got motivated after reading this topic, and went in to my PSP 8 program to try a few things. I still can't even figure out how to draw pixel by pixel with this thing. Any tips?

Typically you choose a "pencil" or "paintbrush", set the pixel-size to 1, and turn off any anti-aliasing, etc. Then zoom in real close on something, and start dotting.

Here's one I made of Bowser from Super Mario Bros. 1 using Paint Shop Pro 9.

Fairly simple, but it seemed like it took me a while to finish it (over an hour at least).

It looks good! I'm still having troubles with the whole "new wave of picture editing" thing. At least MSPaint is still keeping me satisfied with the things I need to do. Nice work, Z.E.N!

Here's some new NES pixel art I just finished for a signature on another forum. This one took me about 2 hours.

I think the most recent is my favorite

Nice! I like that. I think I might try to do a peripheral... seems like that'd be fun to try. There seems to be some talent floating around the NES Files!

Well, here's a couple more pixel creations. The first is a Nintendo Zapper skull and crossbones I created for a friend. The second I created for part of a signature for a person I know on another forum. These took about 1 hour each.

Do you also plan to make a Japanese Famicom in the near future?

Keep up the good work.

Dude! You keep getting better and better! Are you sure you haven't done this before?

I wish I could get into photoshop, but I just like the simple, pixel-by-pixel look of MS Paint.

After all, I made my avatar with it, even though it took me two days.

YOU MADE THAT IN MS PAINT? Awesome job UBR_NWB!

Thanks. I was going for a Super-Nintendo look. However, I pretty much maxxed out on it, so my art is going to be relatively simple for a while, like my Mulletboy gifs.
