OVERRATED!

In Games

Time to stir up some controversy...

You know what "overrated" means:
1. Any game that is generally considered better than what it really is.
2. Any game that receives way too much praise for which it does not deserve.

There's probably a better definition but I'll leave that up to you.
Try to think of a list if you can (and explain your reasoning if possible).
Here's my well thought out list...

OVERRATED:

1. Asteroids
Sitting in the middle of the screen, turning and shooting at rocks for points is NOT entertaining.

2. Final Fantasy Tactics
Dull, boring, pathetic, etc. This game has the worst storyline of any wannabe RPG (not to mention an even worse ending) and forces you to play as a bunch of lifeless characters in a game which has you looking at menu screens and figuring out stats rather than actually playing.

3. Conker's Bad Fur Day
More like 'Conker's Bad Game'. It tries to hide the fact that it's a dull, run-of-the-mill platformer by smearing the storyline with profanity and fecal matter (literally) and only about 30% of it is actually "funny".

4. Final Fantasy VIII
Square took their beloved 'Final Fantasy' series and turned it into an episode of ''.

5. Gran Turismo
The greatest racing sim ever! (Except for maybe the unrealistic physics, poor handling, and damage proof cars.)

6. Dead Or Alive
No doubt entranced by the visuals, many players somehow thought this was a "good" fighting game.

7. Kid Icarus
Sure it was developed by the makers of 'Metroid' and released on the same day, but guess what? It's NOT 'Metroid'. It is however, poorly made.

8. The Sims
I'm seem to be missing the fun here.

9. Strider
This is referring to the Genesis version which won "Game of the Year" honors in its time. Very lame, typical side-scroller.

10.Super Mario Bros. 3
Although the best game on this list, I get tired of hearing about how great it is. It's not a "10" it's an "8.5" and in that regard, "overrated".

KABLAM!

I can't comment on most of your list, but I agree that Asteroids isn't fun...

FF Tactics, as much as I tried and tried to like it, it's just too slow to be anything close to enjoyable.

FFVIII I didn't like at first, but after playing it more, I would consider it one of the better games. Nor because of the story or any of that, but because of the GFs they really made the game interesting.

Gran Turismo is probably the best and most realistic game out there... the physics in it are better than in 90% of racing games.

The Sims I can also agree on, just isn't a fun game. There is nothing to do... tell your sim to eat, tell your sim to go to the bathroom, listen to your sim whine because it wants something to do...

as for my list...

GTA: SA it's a good game over all, but not nearly what it was hyped up to be.

State of Emergency: not nearly what it was hyped up to be again, in fact, the actual game is entirely different than what was claimed.

most games on the 2600 (or most atari consoles for that matter) the graphics are just too terrible to have a playable game.

5. Gran Turismo
The greatest racing sim ever! (Except for maybe the unrealistic physics, poor handling, and damage proof cars.)

Got to agree with you on that one. I wouldn't have a problem if it wasn't for people going on about how realistic it was. Yeah, so realistic you can smash into a brick wall at 250 mph and then drive away.

For me I'd say Street Fighter 2010 II (this is where people start shouting at me). I just never understood the appeal of these type of fighting games. And what I understood even less was why people kept on paying up for the latest Super Turbo Championship Bonanza edition that came out every few months.

There ARE far too many games out there that somehow get the glamour of being declared "great." What springs quickly to my mind is the first-person shooter genre all together. Games with the "Doom-ish" perspective. I have grown tired of most of these games. It started off as, "Wow, this is pretty cool to be able to see from this point-of-view!" to, "OK, what game ISN'T going to be from this angle?" Some of them are good games, but still, overrated.

Fifa Soccer Series

I always liked International Superstar Soccer more.

Agree 100%. ISS was so much better than FIFA. And for pure fun Sensible Soccer was also excellent. Even these days Fifa is second best to Pro Evolution, but Fifa is still the best seller.

Time to stir up some controversy...
1. Asteroids
Sitting in the middle of the screen, turning and shooting at rocks for points is NOT entertaining.

At the time it was first released, it was a new game and had entertainment value in arcades everywhere.

3. Conker's Bad Fur Day
More like 'Conker's Bad Game'..... only about 30% of it is actually "funny".

Crappy one-liners arent funny either.

It tries to hide the fact that it's a dull, run-of-the-mill platformer by smearing the storyline with profanity and fecal matter (literally) and only about 30% of it is actually "funny".

It may have not had the best plot in the world, but the places and the music in that game are so unforgetable and catchy. It also had one of the best multiplayer games on the N64. You have to give it that if nothing else.

7. Kid Icarus
Sure it was developed by the makers of 'Metroid' and released on the same day, but guess what? It's NOT 'Metroid'.

Which is why they called it Kid-Icarus and not Metroid.

It is however, poorly made.

It was boring and repetitive at times, but the engine seemed solid enough. I haven't really played the game intensely enough to give you my full view on it though.

10.Super Mario Bros. 3
Although the best game on this list, I get tired of hearing about how great it is. It's not a "10" it's an "8.5" and in that regard, "overrated".
This is an outstanding game hands down. If you would rate the game an 8.5 you obviously like it alot which would be stupid to call it overated because you yourself give it a high rating.

As for the other games you mentioned, I haven't really gotten a chance to experience them.

personally, i LOVE three of the games mentioned in the first post:

1. asteroids - it is entertaining to a lot of people. it does repeat itself, but it gets harder.

2. Kid Icarus - yes, you do the same basic thing through each level, but enemies change, you get new items, and is a good game for the era it was made in. (i'd even prefer it over most games made today)

3. Super Mario Bros. 3 - GREAT game and idea for mario. a semi different idea of getting to each new world. and more than 4 levels per world. -makes for a more interesting, good, and longer mario game-

thug 2
i think its very much overrated

3. Conker's Bad Fur Day
More like 'Conker's Bad Game'..... only about 30% of it is actually "funny".
Crappy one-liners arent funny either.

How "ironic" irony can be.

It tries to hide the fact that it's a dull, run-of-the-mill platformer by smearing the storyline with profanity and fecal matter (literally) and only about 30% of it is actually "funny".

Strange. I found most of it quite "forgettable" (except the bad parts).
And I actually didn't mind the plot.

I didn't try that. The single player game is atrocious.

7. Kid Icarus
Sure it was developed by the makers of 'Metroid' and released on the same day, but guess what? It's NOT 'Metroid'.

Wow really?! I had no idea! I guess now it's a great game!
Actually I was referring to how everyone seems to think this game belongs on the same level as Metroid. I know it's not the same as Metroid.

10.Super Mario Bros. 3
Although the best game on this list, I get tired of hearing about how great it is. It's not a "10" it's an "8.5" and in that regard, "overrated".

I was actually being generous with that rating. Anyway, it's still higher than what I think it deserves, therefore "overrated".
If I didn't bring it up, no one else would have.

...

That reminds me...

Overrated = 'Sonic Adventure'

I don't think SMB3 was overrated. At that time it was the best Jumb'n Rung game available. And it's still the best of its kind on the NES.
The levels are well designed and there are plenty of them, the controls are very good.

no one else would have brought it up because no one thinks the same about mario 3 as you do. you just seem to be EXTREMELY picky when it comes to games

I'm going to have to agree with you on Kid Icarus, and Strider, but Conker's BFD is really one of the 64's better platformers, and it had a BAJILLION of em. The humor wasn't all kindergarten jokes either, it was more often than not genuinely funny, and the multiplayer was some of the best on the system.

I didn't play Conker by myself, but I have a good friend who has it and he loves it because of the good playability and the "not kindergarten" jokes.

conker is a good game. i havent played the WHOLE thing, but i've played a lot of areas of the game. the bosses are fun to fight to, you get some laughs off of them. there was the great mighty poo, the caveman, and so on.

Yeah, the game was very well done. Clever, unique bosses, and great direction on the spoofs.

new Metroid games...

i hate them in comparison too the old nes ones and such

new Metroid games...

i hate them in comparison too the old nes ones and such

"New" Metroid games as in Prime 1 and 2? Or do you mean Fusion and Zero Mission as well?

i really liked Metroid prime. (though the old ones were good as well)
i also have the demo to Metroid prime-hunters for my nintendo DS. it looks pretty sweet.

yeah my ds Metroid prime demo has great graphics but the gameplay i dislike and no im only talking bout both of the gamecube versions.... prime 1 and echos

I only played Metroid on the SNES and I didn't like it that much. I'm not such a big fan of shooters.

If you ask me i think the Dragon Warrior series is overrated,it bores the hell outta me .

yes. Dragon Warrior can get boring, but it is fun for a while. i think any of those rpg's where battles randomly pop up get boring. -.-' ^-^

Halo 2
yes i no u think im crazy but its not as good as number 1 i dont think i think its got way too much publicity

No I don't think you're crazy. I played Halo 2 briefly on my friends X-box and it was good, but not as good as the "best game ever" tag that a lot of people had given it before they had even played it. Overrated.

OH! I totally forgot about that. I haven't played Halo 2, so I'm going to have to say Halo. O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D. A LOT. I seriously have no clue what all the hubbub is about over that game. It's seriously not that fun....

You have to try Dragon Quest 7 or 8 one time. Even if you didn't like the first ones, those may be the ones you like. Akira Toriyama's character design is so hilarious, it's great!

i think everyone will hate me for this... i hate the halo games. i played halo 1 and 2 with my friend, an i must say, i dont know what everyone see's in that game. halo is way over rated

I love you for that!
I also can't figure the hell out what's so good about Halo. I'm no fan of shooters...

i do like most shooters
such as: duke nukem, doom, (if you'd count resident evil), and stuff, but halo is a horrible one. its hard to control, your guy is lame, its way to easy to walk of a cliff, the list goes on and on...

i know some people like it, but in my opinion, it sucks

Strange, seems like there's not a single Halo fan here. But then this is a NES board I suppose.

i guess everyone is entitled to there own opinion, (but our opinion is right -just kidding-)

i hope that game goes down the crapper though. DOWN WITH HALO!

(if you'd count resident evil),

Nah, its a survival horror game.

ya, i was just saying, besause you shoot stuff and all. but what ever

well i wouldnt go that far as to say its not even that fun but like daynum said its not as great as people make it out to be

i would go as far as to say it is no fun, halo games are pure evil! they suck tremendously. (thats my opinion of corse ^-^)

lol, why do you think that?
Do you hate shooters?

I love FPSs. I like Doom III, Painkiller, grew up on Doom, Quake I and II, played the hell out of Goldeneye on 64 when I was younger, I even like Timesplitters 2 for my 'cube. I don't understand what all the hype is over Halo. I seriously was not enjoying myself. I'm not anti XBox, either. I have close to 20 games for mine.

o lord one of the greatest games ever goldeneye 007 for 64 that brings back o so many memories!

no, i dont hate shooters... just the halo games

Resident Evil doesn't count as shooter game. Actually I'm thinking about buying RE4 for Gamecube. I heard it's one of the best games ever.

I wouldn't say I hate Halo because of the game... I hate Halo because of the hype... there's nothing innovative or special about it like a lot of Bungie's other titles (Oni for example) but it is a fairly solid game...

I wouldn't say that I love first-person shooters, but they're okay. I feel it is just another perspective that has been added to the gaming world, but gets used way too much. The hardware made now-a-days allows the gamer to be IN the game now, so that's a plus. I just feel there are a lot of similarities in all of those style games released, and not much innovation, like NES-Luke had stated.

On the flip side of that coin, the same may have been said about the games of yester-year, and that they all played similar with a side-scrolling perspective. There were different weapons and such is the argument I have on that, however.

The bottom line is that all of these newer games in that perspective have the EXACT same style. If there were other options incorporated, I'd likely get into it more. I just get bored having to decide which weapon I want to see in my face for the next 30-50 hours of gaming that I have to endure.

Okay, I wouldn't say I LOVE first person shooters I guess, but they can be good for some good dumb fun. Half Life 2 and Metroid Prime expanded the genre a lot, I think. Doom III and Painkiller are just dumb fun run-and-gun games though. FPS doesn't even make my top three favorite genres, which would be Survival Horror, Rhythm, and Adventure.

a lot of fps's are awsome. (i love a lot of the older ones)

From what I played of Metroid Prime, I did enjoy! Still haven't played the second Half-Life, though. I'll give them a shot when I get a chance...

i played a little bit of the first half life game. it was really good.

just while we're on the subject of games, (even though this isnt an FPS), has anyone in here played diablo 2 for pc? (i watched my friend beat it and i have a save file on it, its kind easy)

One of the best games ever. but don't say it's easy until you play it on Hell difficulty

on a somewhat related note, if anyone wanted to meet up and play on Battle.net I'd be up for it

well, with the whole "hell dificulty", i guess you got me there. i never stopped to think i beat it on normal. (games arent as fun on easy, they're to..... easy!)

one game thats nearly IMPOSSIBLE on extremely hard is soul calibur.
(put it on extremely hard, you can barely touch the computer character at all! they just keep moving and moving and attacking etc.)

True. Soul Calibur is so hard.
But I saw Japanese guys who beat the hell out of it even in the highest difficulty level.
You need to go to Japanese game stores and/or arcades.

I think the most over-rated NES game (judging from who I talk to) is easily Battletoads. There are just too many bad things about this game to make it good. I think the sloppy controls are what bugs me most about it.

And the post-NES game would be Metroid Prime. I bought it, beat it, and swore never to play it again. I felt there weren't any fun boss battles, not enough variety in enemies, and puzzles that were just ho-hum. But fear not, I am trading Prime for Firce 'n Ice to my buddy.

Those are japanese games aren't they?I'd have to translate everything then, you can find translaters everywhere but that's alot of work.that would even bore me more!If your talking graphix and so on i can understand that it must be better.

Dragon Warrior 7 was released in the US for PSX a few years back. I don't think the same is true for Dragon Warrior 8, yet. I am going to presume that Dragon Warrior is the American Dragon Quest. I do remember something about releasing a Dragon Quest for PS2.. Maybe somebody knows the facts better than I.

DQ7 is available in English, and I think, DQ8 will also be published in the US, or maybe Europe.
DQ8 just looks so great.
If I had the money I'd buy a PS2 just because of that game.

i think Dragon Warrior and battle toads are both awsome games.
(in my opinion, neither are over rated)

I don't know Battle Toads myself, but from what I hear and read it isn't bad.

Is it possible to not have played Battletoads?

Yes, it is.
I wanted to buy it when I was little, but didn't have enough money.
Maybe I should get the NES ROM and try it on the computer.

I enjoyed Battletoads but I didn't think that it was the awesome game a lot of people did. In that sense I suppose I could call it over rated, but only just.

Contra is overrated...Zelda is flat out boring

...

Zelda is a really good game...
i agree, Final Fantasy is WAY over rated

The Zelda series is the best series of games out there.
As for Final Fantasy, I didn't play the Playstation parts, but up to FF6, this is also a very good series.

Just got LEGENDS OF WRESTLING SHOWDOWN. Poorly put together like 1 and 2. I guess u cant expect more. O well 50 bucks spent that wasnt worth it.

50$ for a poor game that wasn't worth it??
Didn't you know that it's so bad before you bought it? Or did you just buy it for the collection's sake?
